Description:
Chemical Name: FINASTERIDE (fi-NAS-teer-ide)

PROPECIA is the first pill form of medication used to treat hair loss in men, particularly in the vertex and the anterior mid-scalp area (receding hairline and/or balding on the top of the head). Male pattern hair loss is a common condition when men experience thinning of the hair on the scalp. PROPECIA helps prevent the hair loss by blocking an action enzyme and converting testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT) in the body. PROPECIA is available only by prescription.

***For MEN ONLY and should NOT be used by women or children.

Manufacturer:
Merck Frosst

Directions:
Generally doctors will advise to take one tablet by mouth daily. PROPECIA can be ingested with or without food any time of the day. The important thing is to remember to take it. You should expect to take PROPECIA for at least 3 months before you start to see results.

Cautions:
Not all medications work effectively for everybody so it is important to speak to your doctor about any health conditions such as the following:

  • liver disease
  • abnormal liver enzyme tests
  • prostate cancer
  • if you are suffering from a bladder muscle disorder
  • if you are unable to urinate
  • if you have ever had an allergic reaction to a similar medicine called dutasteride (Avodart)
PROPECIA should never be taken by a woman or a child. The key chemical called finasteride can be absorbed through the skin. Women or children should not handle tablets containing finasteride.

Do not give your PROPECIA tablets to anyone else. It has been prescribed only for you.

Side Effects:
Similar to other prescription products, PROPECIA may cause side effects. Most men experience no adverse effects while taking PROPECIA. Some side effects that were experienced by users are:

  • sexual side effects (low sex drive, erectile dysfunction & decrease in the amount of semen)
  • problems with ejaculation
  • breast swelling and/or tenderness
Stop taking PROPECIA and seek emergency medical attention if you experience an allergic reaction including:
  • difficulty breathing
  • closing of the throat
  • swelling of the lips, tongue, or face
  • hives
Tell your doctor immediately if you experience any of the above or any other unusual effects.

PROPECIA can affect a blood test called Prostate-Specific Antigen(PSA) for the screening of prostate cancer. If you have a PSA test done, you should tell your doctor that you are taking PROPECIA. Additionally the use of PROPECIA may increase your risk of developing prostate cancer. Your doctor will perform tests to make sure you do not have other conditions that would prevent you from safely using PROPECIA.

Although PROPECIA should not be used by women, it can cause birth defects if a woman is exposed to it during pregnancy. Tablets should not be handled by pregnant women or who may become pregnant. If a woman accidentally comes into contact with PROPECIA from a broken or crushed tablet, wash the area with soap and water immediately.
