You have your suitcase packed and are ready to hit the road. You have made sure to double check everything, twice. Do you have enough of your blood pressure medication? Cholesterol? Allergy pills? Or insulin?
Whatever the medication or over-the-counter remedy you take, your trip will not be as much fun without them. While you are traveling across the safari or visiting your summer home, here are a few ways to make sure you have your medications when you need them:
Bring an extra supply of your medication or over-the-counter items with you, just in case you lose or spill some. This will ensure you have enough medication to last your entire trip and extras in case your trip is extended for any purpose. Some medications are not dispensed in other countries, in which case it would be difficult to get a prescription filled away from home.
Have your doctor write a prescription to take with you while you are away. That way if you do need to get an extra supply, you have your prescription ready.
If you take prescription medications, carry a letter written by your physician stating all of the medications and over-the-counter items that you take, including: name, dosage and condition for taking the medication. Recently, with increased airport security, they are more concerned with what is in your bag. This may pose a particular concern if you require medical equipment, such as syringes to inject your medication.
Always keep your medication with you while you are traveling. You may need to take your medication while in transit. If there is a delay in the plane taking off for example, you will want to have access to your medication when needed. The temperature in the cargo of the plane or the trunk of a car is not controlled and medications should not be exposed to extreme hot or cold temperatures.
In addition, if your luggage is lost, you may be without your medication for days.
Do not drink the water! There are a number of regions in the world that do not have safe drinking water. If you need to take your medication with water, bring bottled water from home or the hotel you are staying at, or remember to have some extra change to purchase bottled water from a store. If you need to take your medication with food, bring a small snack with you.
Now you are ready for anything!
Enjoy the trip - Bon Voyage!
