Osteoporosis is a disease that causes your bones to become fragile and break. If osteoporosis is left untreated, it can progress painlessly until a bone breaks. These broken bones are called fractures and commonly occur in the hip, wrist and spine.

If you have osteoporosis there may be a long period of time during which you have no symptoms while your bones gradually become thinner. Most people are diagnosed with osteoporosis after having sharp pain in the mid to low back that seems to have developed for no reason. Others experience fractures of the bone in the thigh, hipbone, or lower arm bone above the wrist.

  • Age: Bone is a living tissue that is continually growing with age. Bones usually reach their maximum mass when people are in their mid-thirties. At about age 40, more bone tissue is lost than is made, and so the bones start to become weaker.
  • Lifestyle: Cigarette smoking, alcohol, little or no exercise and inadequate amounts of calcium and vitamin D all increase your chances of developing osteoporosis.
  • Gender: Chances of developing osteoporosis are greater if you are a woman. Women are four times more likely than men to experience osteoporosis in their lifetime. Women have less bone tissue and lose bone more rapidly than men because of the changes involved with menopause.

Eat a well-balanced diet and foods rich in calcium. Some foods rich in calcium are low-fat milk, cheese, broccoli, sardines, yogurt, tofu, almonds, beans, sesame seeds and turnip greens. Bones also respond well to exercise by increasing in strength and mass. Weight-bearing activities such as walking, dancing, low-impact aerobics and stationary cycling can contribute to strong bones.

Speak to your healthcare provider to find out if you are at risk for developing osteoporosis. Your healthcare provider can help you determine how much you are at risk and what you can do to help prevent this disease from affecting you.

Yours in good health,
