More than one million Americans have a heart attack each year. The more you know, the better you can prevent this from happening to you. Canada Pharmacy is here to help keep you informed.

The heart receives a constant flow of oxygen-rich blood in order to function properly. During a heart attack this constant blood flow to the heart is reduced or blocked by fat-like buildup (plaque) in one or more arteries.

Heart attacks can also occur due to coronary heart disease, in which fatty deposits (plaque) build up over a number of years inside the coronary arteries. Eventually an area of plaque ruptures causing a blood clot to form on the surface. If the blood clot becomes large enough it will completely block the blood flow to the heart, causing a heart attack.

  • Chest discomfort- Most heart attacks involve discomfort in the center of the chest that may last for a few minutes, or may go away and return. It can feel like uncomfortable pressure, squeezing, fullness or pain.
  • Discomfort in upper body- Pain or discomfort may occur in one or both arms, the back, neck, jaw or stomach.
  • Shortness of breathe- With or without chest discomfort.
  • Breaking out in cold sweat, nausea or lightheadedness.
Symptoms may last for up to 30 minutes or longer while a heart attack is occurring and are unable to be controlled or stopped by rest or consuming oral medications.

There are many ways to help prevent a heart attack. Here are a few healthy heart tips to get you on the right track.
  • Avoid tobacco smoke.
  • Monitor any blood related health problems, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, coronary artery disease, and diabetes.
  • Develop a low-fat diet, rich in fruits, vegetables and protein. Avoid high salt intake.
  • Participate in a physical activity you enjoy, such as yoga, walking, running, or cycling. Exercise is key to an active and healthy heart.
Have a healthy heart this Valentines Day!

Yours in good health,
