Summer is officially here ... and that means that fun in the sun is on everybody's mind! It's a time for picnics, barb-be-cues, and spending as much time as possible outside enjoying the weather. We've missed the heat for so long that it can be easy to forget how careful we have to be while basking in the sun's rays. A little bit of preparation before you go out can make sure you get the most out of each day; we've got some tips to help you keep safe in the sun.

Wearing sunscreen/sunblock has become a habit for most people; here are some refreshers on how to get the most out of your sunblock:

  1. Apply a sunscreen that is at least SPF 15 about 20 minutes before you go out into the sun. Use a higher strength if you are going to be out for a long period of time.

  2. Make sure that you apply enough sunscreen! Most of the time, you need about two tablespoons of lotion to get adequate coverage.

  3. Put sunscreen on all areas that are going to be exposed to the sun, including the tips of your ears. Wear a hat to cover your scalp, and make sure that you keep your sunglasses handy to protect your eyes.

  4. Use a broad spectrum sunscreen such as Ombrelle or Anthelios that will protect you from UVA and UVB rays. For kids, make sure that you use a special children's' formulation designed for their sensitive skin.

  5. Wear sunscreen on overcast days as well as sunny ones. Even if it's cloudy, UV radiation will still penetrate through the clouds and can burn your skin.

As the summers continue to get warmer and warmer, we have to be careful of the heat as well as the UV rays. Here are some ideas on how to keep your cool this summer:
  1. Wear breathable, light colored clothing that will reflect the heat. Use a wide brimmed hat or umbrella to provide some artificial shade.

  2. Drink lots of water. In order to cool off naturally, your body produces sweat; in order to sweat, you need to be hydrated!

  3. Stay indoors during the hottest part of the day, or limit your outdoor activities at these times.

  4. Make sure to stay in well ventilated areas; this will help prevent the temperatures around you from rising too quickly.

Protecting yourself from the effects of the sun will ensure that you spend more time enjoying the summer. To help you get the most out of this season, CanadaPharmacy offers a wide selection of sun protection products for your entire family.

Yours in good health,
