Description:
NORETHINDRONE (nor-eth-IN-drone) ACETATE and ETHINYL ESTRADIOL (ETH-in-il ess-tra-DYE-ole) and IRON

When used correctly, Femcon Fe is over 99% effective in preventing pregnancy. How does it work? In order to become pregnant, a woman's body undergoes certain changes, including ovulation - the maturation and release of an egg. Birth control pills, such as Femcon Fe, contain hormones that suppress these changes, thus preventing pregnancy. Combination birth control pills like Femcon Fe contain two types of hormones, progestin and estrogen, in varying amounts. A pill with 35 mcg or less of estrogen is considered 'low-dose'. Femcon Fe, with 35 mcg of estrogen (in the form of ethinyl estradiol), is in the category of low-dose pills. The benefits of taking low-dose estrogen include less nausea, headaches, bloating, and breast tenderness. In addition to preventing pregnancy, use of oral contraceptives may provide other health benefits. Menstrual cycles may become more regular, blood flow during menstruation may be lighter and less iron may be lost. Therefore, anemia due to iron deficiency is less likely to occur. Pain or other symptoms during menstruation may be encountered less frequently, ovarian cysts may occur less frequently, Ectopic (tubal) pregnancy may occur less frequently, noncancerous cysts or lumps in the breast may occur less frequently, acute pelvic inflammatory disease may occur less frequently. Oral contraceptive use may provide some protection against developing two forms of cancer: cancer of the ovaries and cancer of the lining of the uterus.
