Chemical Name ATORVASTATIN Lipitor is used with diet changes to reduce the amount of cholesterol and certain fatty substances in the blood. It works by slowing the production of cholesterol in the body. Buildup of cholesterol and fats along the walls of the blood vessels decreases blood flow and, therefore, the oxygen supply to the heart, brain, and other parts of the body. Lowering blood levels of cholesterol and fats may help to prevent heart disease, angina, strokes, and heart attacks.

Each health care professional may prescribe medications differently according to a patient's medical history and condition to ensure that they are getting the best possible results. Typically, LIPITOR is usually taken once a day, at the same time, with or without food. LIPITOR starts to work in approximately 2 weeks. It is advisable that patients check their cholesterol levels throughout their treatment with LIPITOR, as dosage levels may be changed based on the test results.
It is advised to stop using LIPITOR if you:

- are pregnant or planning to become pregnant
- are breastfeeding

Before taking Lipitor, advise your health care professional if you have diabetes, a thyroid disorder, muscle pain or weakness, a history of liver or kidney disease, or if you drink more than 2 alcoholic beverages daily. Additionally, some medications should not be taken with LIPITOR. Although side effects resulting from LIPITOR are not common, it can cause moderate to serious side effects. Inform your health care professional of any side effects so they can closely monitor them. Moderate side effects usually go away if dosage is lowered or the patient stops taking LIPITOR.

What is a Generic Drug?
A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.
The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.
Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.
