What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

    Description

    Your doctor may prescribe Vantin for the treatment of a bacterial infection. It is indicated to treat the following conditions:

    • Acute exacerbation of COPD
    • Otitis media
    • Pneumonia
    • Rhinosinusitis
    • Skin infection
    • Streptococcal pharyngitis


    Vantin is an antibacterial medication that works by preventing bacterial cells from building a cell wall. The cell wall is a critical organ for bacterial cells and protects them from their environment. By preventing the formation of cell walls, Vantin slows and stops bacterial infections.

    Directions

    The usual dose of Vantin is 200 mg by mouth twice daily for 5-7 days. The dose and length of therapy may be different depending on the specific type of infection.

    Ingredients

    The active ingredient in this drug is cefpodoxime proxetil.

    Interactions

    May drugs, including Vantin, have potential drug-drug interactions. Tell your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any of the following:
