What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

    Description

SOVALDI (sofosbuvir) is a medication prescribed to treat chronic hepatitis C (HCV) infection. SOVALDI is prescribed as part of a treatment regimen and may be prescribed in combination with ribavirin or PEG-interferon alfa.

The hepatitis C virus is made up of a small amount of genetic material in a protein capsule. The virus uses different proteins to replicate itself, including NS5B RNA-dependent RNA polymerase. Sofosbuvir stops the action of this protein, preventing the replication of HCV.

    Directions

Take one tablet of SOVALDI 400 mg by mouth once daily with or without food.

The length of treatment and whether you take SOVALDI in combination with other drugs will depend on the genetic makeup of your hepatitis C infection. Do not take SOVALDI differently than how your doctor prescribed it.

The recommended treatment duration and regimens include:

    • Genotype 1 or 4: SOVALDI, ribavirin, and PEG-interferon alfa for 12 weeks
    • Genotype 2: SOVALDI and ribavirin for 12 weeks
    • Genotype 3: SOVALDI and ribavirin for 24 weeks

Your doctor may prescribe you a regimen different than the ones listed above. Take SOVALDI exactly as prescribed.

    Ingredients

The active ingredient of SOVALDI is sofosbuvir.

    Cautions

If you have a history of both hepatitis B and hepatitis C infection, tell your doctor before starting SOVALDI. Some people with hepatitis B infection have had the virus reactivate after starting SOVALDI, leading to hepatitis, liver failure, and death.

People who take both SOVALDI and the antiarrhythmic drug amiodarone may experience a slowed heart rate (bradycardia) that can be harmful. Tell your doctor all of your current medications before you start taking SOVALDI.

    Side Effects

The most common SOVALDI tablet side effects include:

    • Asthenia
