What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

    Directions

    Follow the instructions on the label of your prescription. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist about any questions or concerns you may have about the medication. 

    Bystolic is available in 2.5 mg, 5 mg, 10 mg, and 20 mg oral tablets. 

    The typical starting dose is 5 mg by mouth one time a day with or without food. The dose can be increased every 2 weeks, up to 40 mg.

    Ingredients

    Each Bystolic tablet contains nebivolol hydrochloride. Inactive ingredients include colloidal silicon dioxide, croscarmellose sodium, D and C Red #27 Lake, FD and C Blue #2 Lake, FD and C Yellow #6 Lake, hypromellose, lactose monohydrate, magnesium stearate, microcrystalline cellulose, pregelatinized starch, polysorbate 80, and sodium lauryl sulfate.

    Contraindications

    Do not take Bystolic if you have any of the following conditions:

    • Heart rate that is severely low
    • Heart block greater than first degree
    • You are in cardiogenic shock
    • Decompensated heart failure
    • Sick sinus syndrome (unless you have a permanent pacemaker)
    • Severe liver problems 
    • Allergic to nebivolol or any of its ingredients 

    Cautions

    • Talk to your doctor about all the medications you take, your allergies, your health conditions, and your pregnancy or breastfeeding status before starting treatment with Bystolic.
    • Bystolic should not be stopped abruptly. Doing so can worsen coronary artery disease.
    • Bystolic can mask the symptoms of low blood sugar in patients with diabetes. Monitor your blood sugar and treat low blood sugar as your doctor has instructed.

    Side Effects

    The most common Bystolic side effects are headache and fatigue.

    Contact your doctor right away if you develop side effects that bother you or won't go away.
