Description
Elmiron is used to relieve bladder pain or discomfort caused by interstitial cystitis, also known as painful bladder syndrome.
Elmiron is available in a 100 mg oral capsule. The Elmiron generic is pentosan polysulfate sodium.
Directions
Take Elmiron as your doctor has prescribed. If you have any questions or concerns, talk to your doctor or pharmacist.
The recommended Elmiron dose is 100 mg by mouth three times a day. Take the capsules with water at least 1 hour before or two hours after meals. Your doctor will tell you how long you should take Elmiron.

Ingredients
Pentosan polysulfate sodium is the active ingredient contained in each Elmiron capsule. Inactive ingredients include microcrystalline cellulose, magnesium stearate, gelatin, pharmaceutical glaze (modified) in SD-45, synthetic black iron oxide, FD and C Blue No. 2 aluminum lake, FD and C Red No. 40 aluminum lake, FD and C Blue No. 1 aluminum lake, D and C Yellow No. 10 aluminum lake, n-butyl alcohol, propylene glycol, SDA-3A alcohol, and titanium dioxide.
Contraindications
Do not take Elmiron if you are allergic to the drug or to any of its components.
Cautions
- Before you begin treatment with Elmiron, you should tell your doctor about:
- All the medications you take
- Your allergies
- Your health history and current health problems
- Your pregnancy or breastfeeding status
- Elmiron may cause pigment changes in the retina and vision problems.
- Elmiron may cause bleeding. You should watch for signs and symptoms of bleeding such as bleeding from your gums; dark, tarry stools; and nosebleeds that won't stop after 10-15 minutes of applied pressure. Seek medical care right away if any of these effects occur. You should also seek medical care right away if you have fallen and hit your head.
- Elmiron may cause hair loss.
- Caution should be used if you have liver problems.
Side Effects
Elmiron side effects include stomach pain, diarrhea, and dehydration; however, these are not all the side effects that can occur. Contact your doctor right away if you have side effects that bother you or won't go away.
