What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

    Description

FINACEA (Azelaic acid) gel is a medication prescribed to treat rosacea.

Rosacea is a condition where the skin of the face becomes red and inflamed with visible blood vessels. Rosacea is thought to be caused by a combination of factors, including bacteria, stress, alcohol consumptions, sunlight, and other stressors.

The exact mechanisms of how FINACEA gel works are not entirely clear, but it is thought to work in two different ways. FINACEA gel has some antimicrobial properties and is active against two common types of bacteria that cause rosacea, including Cutibacterium acnes and Staphylococcus epidermidis. FINACEA gel also seems to decrease microcomedo formation, which is a step in the process of acne formation.

    Directions

Use FINACEA gel exactly as prescribed by your doctor. The normal dose of FINACEA gel is to apply a thin layer to the affected area twice daily. Speak with your doctor if you do not see improvement after 12 weeks.

Before using FINACEA gel, wash and dry the affected area with mild soap and pat dry the area before applying the medication. Wash your hands after using FINACEA gel.

    Ingredients

The active ingredient in FINACEA gel is azelaic acid.
