What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

    Diclofenac sodium gel, 1% is for use on the skin only. Avoid getting the gel in your mouth, nose, or eyes. 

    Your prescription should come with a dosing card. The dosing card is used to help you measure out the appropriate amount of gel. 

    Dosing

    Do not apply more than 32 grams total per day.

    Dosing for lower extremities:

    Apply 4 grams to the affected area four times daily. Do not exceed more than 16 grams a day to any one affected joint.

    Dosing for upper extremities: 

    Apply 2 grams to the affected area four times daily. Do not exceed more than 8 grams daily to any one affected joint.

    Diclofenac sodium is the active ingredient in diclofenac sodium topical gel, 1%.

    Contraindications

    Do not use diclofenac sodium gel if you are allergic to diclofenac, aspirin, or other NSAIDs.

    Do not use diclofenac sodium gel if you have ever experienced asthma, hives, or any other allergic reaction after taking aspirin or other NSAIDs.

    Do not use diclofenac sodium gel before coronary artery bypass graft surgery.

    Cardiovascular Risk

    • Non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) may cause an increased risk of
      serious cardiovascular thrombotic events, myocardial infarction, and stroke,
      which can be fatal. 
    • Voltaren® Gel is contraindicated for the treatment of peri-operative pain in the
      setting of coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery. Gastrointestinal Risk
    • Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), including Voltaren® Gel,cause an increased risk of serious gastrointestinal adverse events including bleeding, ulceration, and perforation of the stomach or intestines, which can be fatal. Elderly patients are at greater risk for serious gastrointestinal events
    • Before you start using diclofenac sodium gel, 1%, tell your doctor: 
      • About any allergies you have
      • About any medications you take, including prescription and over-the-counter medications
      • About your health conditions and medical history
      • If you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant
      • If you are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed
    • NSAIDs can cause severe and potentially fatal cardiovascular thrombotic events, heart attack, and stroke. Use the lowest dose of diclofenac sodium gel if you have risk factors for cardiovascular disease.
    • NSAIDs can cause gastrointestinal inflammation, bleeding, ulceration, and perforation. Tell your doctor if you have ever had ulcer disease or gastrointestinal bleeding.
    • Diclofenac can cause abnormal liver tests. Your doctor may discontinue diclofenac if your abnormal liver tests worsen or won't go away. 
    • Prolonged use of NSAIDs can cause kidney injury. Caution should be used in elderly patients, patients with kidney problems, heart problems, and liver problems, and patients who take fluid pills and certain blood pressure medications. 
    • NSAIDs can cause high blood pressure. 
    • NSAIDs can cause fluid retention. Use caution if you have heart problems or fluid buildup.
    • NSAIDs can cause skin reactions that can be serious and fatal. Seek medical care right away if you develop a rash or other signs of a skin reaction.

    Side Effects

    The most common side effect of diclofenac sodium topical gel, 1% is skin irritation.

    Contact your doctor right away if you experience bothersome or persistent side effects.
