Hygroton uses:
Hygroton (chlorthalidone) is a prescription medication used to treat high blood pressure.
Hygroton is also used for treating fluid retention in premenstrual syndrome, heart failure, and for preventing kidney stones in patients with increased urine calcium levels.
Hygroton is classified as a diuretic, or water pill. It works by helping your body get rid of excess salt and water through urination.
Hygroton 25 mg tablets are available for oral administration.

Directions
Hygroton should be taken exactly as your doctor has prescribed. Tell your doctor or pharmacist about any questions or concerns you have.
Your doctor may start you on a low dose of Hygroton and increase the dose based on your response and tolerance to the medication.
Patients generally take 12.5 mg to 50 mg by mouth once a day or every other day. The medication is recommended to be taken with breakfast and a full glass of water.
Ingredients
Chlorthalidone is the active ingredient in Hygroton.
Contraindications
Hygroton should not be given to patients who are allergic to the medication, to any of its ingredients, or to any similar drugs such as thiazide diuretics and sulfa drugs.
Hygroton should not be given to patients who have severe liver or kidney problems, low potassium or sodium levels in the blood, high calcium levels in the blood, gout or a history of gout, or high blood pressure during pregnancy.
Cautions
- Before you start taking Hygroton, tell your doctor about:
- All the medications you take
- Your allergies
- Your health problems and past medical history
- Your pregnancy or breastfeeding status
- Hygroton can cause sudden low blood pressure.
- Minimize your exposure to sunlight, sunlamps, and ultraviolet light, as Hygroton can make your skin more sensitive to the sun. Wear protective clothing and sunscreen when going outside.
- Hygroton contains lactose. Tell your doctor if you are lactose intolerant.
- Do not drive or perform other hazardous tasks until you know how you tolerate the medication.
Side Effects
Hygroton can cause dizziness, lightheadedness, appetite loss, stomach upset, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, headache, blurred vision, vision problems, and sexual dysfunction. Other side effects may also occur. Tell your doctor right away if you have side effects that worry you or won't go away.
