What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

    Description

Orgovyx (Relugolix) is a prescription medication used to treat adults with advanced prostate cancer. This medication lowers the production of two key hormones by blocking gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) receptors in the pituitary gland: Luteinizing hormone and follicle-stimulating hormone. This results in significantly reduced testosterone production, which helps slow the growth of cancer cells and controls the disease.

    Directions

In contrast to many other hormone-suppressing therapies, Orgovyx is used in oral form. Each film-coated tablet contains 120 mg of relugolix. On the first day or when Orgovyx is interrupted for more than 7 days, take three tablets (360 mg) and continue with one daily tablet after. Make sure you take the medication at approximately the same time each day, with or without food. Do not crush or chew the tablets, but swallow them whole. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember, but if more than 12 hours have passed, do not take another tablet until your next scheduled dose. Even if prostate cancer stops responding to the medication, it’s usually continued to keep testosterone levels low, which helps keep the cancer under control.

    Ingredients

The active ingredient in Orgovyx is relugolix.

Inactive ingredients are mannitol, sodium starch glycolate, hydroxypropyl cellulose, magnesium stearate, hypromellose, titanium dioxide, ferric oxide red, and carnauba wax.

    Cautions

Before taking Orgovyx, inform your doctor of your complete medical history, all the medications and supplements you’re taking, as well as your allergies. This allows your provider to accurately assess your situation and ensure that Orgovyx is the right fit for you.

Some medications can interfere with the way Orgovyx works. For example, this applies to certain heart, infection, or seizure medicines that may raise or lower Orgovyx levels in your body. Your doctor may adjust the timing or dose if none of these medications can be discontinued or replaced.

Orgovyx may affect your heart rhythm by prolonging the QT interval. Therefore, it’s crucial to let your healthcare provider know if you have heart problems, electrolyte imbalances, or take medicines that affect the QT interval. They may check your ECG and electrolyte levels to ensure this medication is safe for your heart.

If you notice allergy symptoms, such as rash, swelling, or trouble breathing, immediately seek medical help.

Orgovyx can be harmful to an unborn baby. If you have a partner who can become pregnant, it’s crucial to use effective birth control during treatment and for 2 weeks after the last dose.

Orgovyx may affect certain blood tests, such as reproductive hormone tests since it lowers hormone levels. Your doctor will monitor your PSA (Prostate-Specific Antigen) and may check testosterone if needed.

    Contraindications

Do not take Orgovyx if you are severely allergic to relugolix or any of the above-named ingredients.

    Side Effects

Patients using Orgovyx commonly report hot flashes or flushing, fatigue, muscle or joint pain, and decreased hemoglobin, reflected as anemia-like symptoms such as tiredness or shortness of breath, increased blood sugar levels, increased triglycerides, increased liver enzymes, constipation, diarrhea, or headache.

Serious and much rarer side effects include serious heart rhythm problems, severe allergic reactions, heart attack or stroke, severe anemia (very low hemoglobin), very high blood sugar, and infertility or reduced fertility.

This is not a complete list of all possible side effects. If you experience persistent or severe side effects of Orgovyx, contact your healthcare provider immediately.
