Description
Valcyte Uses: Valcyte (valganciclovir) is a medication available by prescription to treat inflammation of the retina of the eye in adults with cytomegalovirus (CMV) and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). It is also used to prevent CMV disease in high-risk kidney, heart, and kidney-pancreas transplant adult patients. In pediatric patients, Valcyte is used to prevent CMV disease in kidney and heart transplant patients who are at high-risk.
Valcyte comes in 450 mg oral tablets and a 50 mg/mL oral solution.

Ingredients
Valganciclovir hydrochloride is the active ingredient contained in Valcyte. The tablet formulation includes the following inactive ingredients: microcrystalline cellulose, povidone K-30, crospovidone, and stearic acid. The tablet film-coating contains Opadry Pink®.
The oral solution contains the following inactive ingredients: sodium benzoate, fumaric acid, povidone K-30, sodium saccharin, mannitol, and tutti-frutti flavoring.
Contraindications
Do not take Valcyte if you are allergic to valganciclovir or ganciclovir.
Cautions
Valcyte contains the following FDA Boxed Warnings:
- Patients treated with Valcyte have experienced severe leukopenia, neutropenia, anemia, thrombocytopenia, pancytopenia, and bone marrow failure including aplastic anemia.
- Based on animal data and limited human data, Valcyte may cause temporary or permanent inhibition of sperm production in males and fertility suppression in females.
- Based on animal data, Valcyte may cause birth defects.
- Based on animal data, Valcyte may cause cancers in humans.
- Before you begin treatment with Valcyte, be sure to discuss the following with your doctor:
- All the medications you take, including prescription and over-the-counter medications
- Your allergies
- Your current health conditions and past medical history
- If you are pregnant or breastfeeding
- Acute kidney failure can occur in older patients, patients who are also taking other medications that can damage the kidney, or in patients who are not adequately hydrated. Caution should be used in these patients, and kidney function should be monitored. A dose reduction may be needed.
Side Effects
Diarrhea, fever, fatigue, nausea, tremor, neutropenia, anemia, leukopenia, thrombocytopenia, headache, sleep problems, urinary tract infection, upper respiratory tract infection, and vomiting are possible Valcyte side effects. However, other side effects may also occur. Contact your doctor right away if you have side effects that bother you or won’t go away.
