    Description

    Vemlidy (tenofovir alafenamide) is a prescription medication used to treat hepatitis B virus in adults and children who are at least 12 years of age and have compensated liver disease.

    Vemlidy comes in 25 mg tablets for oral administration.

    Directions

    Ingredients

    Tenofovir alafenamide is the active ingredient in each Vemlidy tablet. Inactive ingredients include croscarmellose sodium, lactose monohydrate, magnesium stearate, microcrystalline cellulose, iron oxide yellow, polyethylene glycol, polyvinyl alcohol, talc, and titanium dioxide.

    Contraindications

    There are no contraindications, or reasons why a person cannot take Vemlidy, per the most recent Prescribing Information. However, patients should consult with their doctor about a treatment regimen that's best for them.

    Cautions

    • Vemlidy contains the following FDA Boxed Warning:
      • Discontinuing hepatitis B treatment may worsen hepatitis B. Patients who stop taking Vemlidy should receive close monitoring of their liver function. Resumption of hepatitis B treatment may be required.
    • Before you start treatment with Vemlidy, talk to your doctor about:
      • All the prescription and over-the-counter medications you take
      • Your allergies
      • Your current health problems and past medical history
      • Your pregnancy or breastfeeding status
    • Vemlidy by itself should not be used to treat HIV-1 infection.
    • New or worsening kidney problems may occur.
    • Lactic acidosis and severe liver enlargement may occur.

    Side Effects

    The most common Vemlidy side effect is headache. However, other side effects may also occur. Contact your doctor right away if you have side effects that bother you or won’t go away.
