What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

    Description

Veozah, also known as fezolinetant, acts as a neurokinin 3 (NK3) receptor antagonist and is used to treat moderate to severe vasomotor symptoms due to menopause, such as hot flashes. It works by targeting and blocking certain neurokinin substances in the brain's temperature control center, which helps regulate body temperature. Veozah may be an appropriate treatment option for those who may be seeking alternatives to hormone replacement therapies.

    Directions

Veozah comes as a 45 mg oral tablet. The standard dosage for managing hot flashes is typically one 45 mg tablet daily with or without food. Your healthcare provider may recommend taking Veozah at the same time each day to maintain an even level of the medicine in your bloodstream.

Before beginning treatment with Veozah, you may need to have baseline bloodwork done to evaluate hepatic function and check for potential liver injury. After starting Veozah, follow-up bloodwork is recommended at 3, 6, and 9 months to monitor hepatic function and detect possible liver injury.

    Ingredients

Veozah contains the active ingredient fezolinetant, which belongs to a class of drugs known as neurokinin 3 (NK3) receptor antagonists. In addition to fezolinetant, Veozah may include several inactive ingredients that contribute to the tablet's structure and stability, such as:

    • Microcrystalline cellulose
    • Polyethylene glycol
    • Magnesium stearate

    Contraindications

Avoid taking or using this medication if any of the following apply:

    • Known severe liver impairment or disease
    • Severe liver problems or end-stage liver disease
    • Concurrent use of medications that are strong inhibitors of CYP1A2 enzymes, as they can significantly increase the levels of fezolinetant in the blood

    Cautions

    • Before starting Veozah, inform your healthcare provider about:
      • Any other medications you are taking
      • Any underlying health conditions
      • All allergies
      • Whether you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant
      • If you are breastfeeding
    • Veozah can cause serious side effects, including increased liver blood test values; your healthcare provider should monitor your liver function before and during Veozah treatment.
    • Immediately report symptoms like nausea, vomiting, jaundice, or upper right abdominal pain, which might indicate liver problems.
    • If you miss a dose of Veozah, take it as soon as you remember on the same day, ensuring a 12-hour gap before the next dose.

    Side Effects

Veozah may lead to several side effects that vary in frequency and severity. The most common Veozah side effects may include sensations of warmth, commonly experienced in the face, neck, and chest, as well as episodes of sudden and intense heat with sweating. Patients may also report stomach pain, back pain, trouble sleeping, and diarrhea.

In rare cases, Veozah could cause more serious side effects that warrant immediate medical attention. These severe reactions might include increased liver blood test measurements, severe abdominal pain, and jaundice, which is characterized by yellowing of the eyes or skin. If these serious side effects occur, consult a healthcare provider promptly.
