What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

    Description

ZETIA (ezetimibe) is a medication prescribed to treat different conditions related to high cholesterol. It can be prescribed for the following:

    • Familial hypercholesterolemia in combination with atorvastatin or simvastatin
    • Homozygous sitosterolemia
    • Mixed hyperlipidemia in combination with fenofibrate
    • Primary hyperlipidemia alone or in combination with a statin medication

ZETIA medication is primarily used to reduce levels of different types of cholesterol in patients whose cholesterol levels are elevated. High levels of certain types of cholesterols are linked to increased cardiovascular events and death. ZETIA can lower these cholesterols but it has not been linked to a reduction in morbidity and mortality of cardiovascular outcomes.

ZETIA works by preventing the absorption of cholesterol in the small intestine. Cholesterol is absorbed in the small intestine from the diet and when it is secreted by the body in the bile. ZETIA’s target protein is the Niemann-Pick C1-Like 1 (NPC1L1) sterol transporter, which is responsible for absorbing cholesterol in the small intestine.

    Directions

Take Zetia 10 mg by mouth once daily with or without food.

    Ingredients

The active ingredient in ZETIA is ezetimibe, which is also the name for ZETIA generic.

    Cautions

Speak with your doctor if you have moderate or severe impairment of the liver.

    Side Effects

Some of the most common adverse effects of ZETIA may include:

    • Arthralgia
    • Diarrhea
    • Myalgia
    • Nasopharyngitis
    • Pain in extremities
    • Sinusitis
    • Upper respiratory infection

Speak with your doctor or pharmacist for a full list of side effects that may apply to you. If you experience muscle aches or pains while taking ZETIA, call your doctor immediately.

    “Great value”

“Ezetia in its original form is expensive. Fortunately, its patent has expired and is now available in generic form. However, my pharmacy in the US is charging me the same price for the generic as for the original. I turned to Northwest Pharmacy for the generic and it saved me over $25 per month. Not insignificant on a fixed income.”
