    Catapres medication should be taken exactly as your doctor has prescribed. Tell your doctor or pharmacist about any questions or concerns you have about the medication.

    Your dose will be based on your blood pressure and tolerance to the medication.

    The starting dose is generally 0.1 mg by mouth two times a day. Your doctor may adjust your dose until blood pressure goals are reached.

    The dose may be lower in elderly patients or in patients with kidney problems.

    Ingredients

    Clonidine hydrochloride is the active ingredient in Catapres. Inactive ingredients include colloidal silicon dioxide, corn starch, dibasic calcium phosphate, FD and C Yellow No. 6, gelatin, glycerin, lactose, and magnesium stearate. FD and C Blue No.1 and FD and C Red No.3. are also included in the Catapres 0.1 mg tablet.

    Contraindications

    Do not take Catapres if you are allergic to clonidine or to any of the other ingredients included in the medication.

    Cautions

    • Before you begin treatment with Catapres, inform your doctor of the following:
      • All the medications you take
      • Your allergies
      • Your health conditions and past medical history
      • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding
    • Do not stop taking Catapres until your doctor tells you to do so, as stopping Catapres abruptly can cause unpleasant symptoms such as nervousness, agitation, headache, tremor, and increased blood pressure.
    • If you are sensitive or allergic to Catapres patches, you may also develop an allergic reaction to Catapres tablets.
    • Tell your doctor if you will be undergoing surgery.
    • Do not drive or participate in other hazardous activities until you know how Catapres affects you.
    • Alcohol and other sedating medications can increase the sedative effects of Catapres.
    • Catapres can cause dry eyes.
    • Catapres should be used with caution if you have severe coronary insufficiency, conduction issues, cerebrovascular disease, chronic kidney failure, or if you had a recent heart attack.

    Side Effects

    Common Catapres side effects include dry mouth, drowsiness, dizziness, constipation, and sedation. Other side effects can also occur, so be sure to inform your doctor of any side effects that bother you or won’t go away.
