What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

    Description

ESTRACE (Estradiol) cream is a medication prescribed to treat vulvar and vaginal atrophy associated with menopause. ESTRACE work by attaching to estrogen receptors in vaginal cells, which reduces vaginal pH, improving symptoms of dryness and mucosal atrophy.

After menopause, the natural levels of estrogen decrease. Dryness and atrophy are common symptoms that occur with the onset of menopause. ESTRACE cream helps to replace endogenous estrogens that are no longer being produced.

    Directions

Insert 2 to 4 grams intravaginally once daily for one to 2 weeks. Gradually reduce the dose until a maintenance dose of 1 gram one to three times weekly is reached. Your dosage may vary based on individual characteristics.

    Ingredients

The active ingredient in ESTRACE cream is 0.1 mg estradiol.

Inactive ingredients include diglycerides, EDTA, hypromellose 2208, monoglycerides, methylparaben, propylene glycol, stearyl alcohol, tertiary-butylhydroquinone, and white ceresin wax.

    Cautions

Estrogen therapy may increase the risk of endometrial cancer, cardiovascular disorders, dementia, and breast cancer. However, topical estrogen, like ESTRACE, is unlikely to increase the risk for these conditions and patients taking systemic (oral) therapy are at the greatest risk. Speak with your doctor if you have a history of these conditions.

    Side Effects

Some common ESTRACE side effects may include:

    • Abdominal pain
    • Abnormal Uterine Bleeding
    • Arthralgia

    • Dysmenorrhea

    • Insomnia
    • Leukorrhea
    • Nausea
    • Urinary Tract infection
    • Vaginal pain
    • Vaginitis
