What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

    What is Addyi?

    • Addyi (flibanserin) is a medication used to treat a lack of sexual desire in premenopausal women. It is sometimes described as “female Viagra.”

    How does it work?

    • The exact mechanism of action is unknown, but Addyi affects the chemical messengers called serotonin and dopamine to produce the desired effects.

    How is it supplied?

    Who should avoid taking Addyi?

    • You should not take Addyi if you have liver impairment. Discuss your risk with your doctor.
    • Addyi should not be taken at the same time as drugs that inhibit the CYP3A4 enzyme. Give your doctor a full list of medications you use before starting Addyi.

    What are the risks?

    • Using alcohol at the same time as Addyi can increase your risk of severely low blood pressure and fainting. You should not drink alcohol within two hours of taking your Addyi dose. You should skip your Addyi dose if you drink three or more alcoholic beverages that evening.
    • Addyi can interact with other medications that could increase your risk of adverse effects or decrease the desired results. Give your doctor a full list of your medications before you start taking Addyi.
    • Some patients could experience increased adverse effects if they are considered “poor metabolizers” with the enzyme CYP2C19. Talk to your doctor about your risk.
    • If you are pregnant or intend to become pregnant, discuss the risks of using Addyi with your doctor.
