What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

    • acute and chronic ear infections in cats and dogs
    • Interdigital cysts in cats and dogs

    Animax ointment is available in 7.5 mL, 15 mL, and 30 mL tubes and 240 mL bottles.

    Your pet's frequency of administration will depend on how severe the condition is. Follow the instructions that come with your pet's Animax prescription. If you have any questions or concerns about your pet's prescription, talk to your veterinarian or pharmacist.

    Wash your hands thoroughly before and after administering Animax Ointment. Use gloves during administration. Keep the medication away from pets and children.

    Dosing for ear infections:

    Examine and remove any earwax, grass awns, ticks, or other foreign materials from your pet's ear canal. Place three to five drops of Animax Ointment into the ear.

    Dosing for infected anal glands and cystic areas:

    Once the gland or cyst has been drained, fill the areas with Animax Ointment.

    Dosing for other dermatologic conditions:

    Clean the affected area(s) well. Apply a thin layer of Animax Ointment.

    Ingredients

    The active ingredients contained in Animax Ointment are neomycin sulfate, thiostrepton, triamcinolone acetonide.

    Cautions

    • Before your cat or dog begins treatment with Animax Ointment, be sure to discuss the following with your veterinarian:
      • Any medications or supplements that you are administering to your pet
      • Your pet's allergies
      • Your pet's health problems
      • If your pet is pregnant or if there are any plans that your pet will become pregnant
      • If your pet is nursing
    • Before you place Animax Ointment into your pet's ear, inspect the ear canal well to be sure that the tympanic membrane is not damaged. This will help prevent damage to the cochlea or vestibular apparatus as well as prevent a middle ear infection from developing.

    Side Effects

    Animax Ointment may cause side effects including elevated SAP and SGPT enzymes, diarrhea, vomiting, large volumes of urine, thirst, Cushing's syndrome, and temporary hearing loss. Contact your veterinarian right away if your pet develops worrisome or persistent side effects.
