What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

    Asmanex HFA comes as an inhaler that contains 50 mcg, 100 mcg, or 200 mcg per puff of a corticosteroid known as mometasone furoate.

    The initial dose is based on previous treatments for asthma. 

    Asmanex HFA directions:

    1. Take the cap off the mouthpiece of the inhaler.
    2. Rinse your mouth with water and spit it out after each use to decrease the risk of fungal infections of the mouth.
    3. Leave the canister on the inhaler.
    4. Clean the mouthpiece with a dry wipe after every 7 days of use. Avoid washing it in water.

    Patients who are at least 12 years old are recommended to inhale 2 puffs by mouth two times a day of Asmanex HFA 100 mcg or 200 mcg.

    Patients who are between the ages of 5 years old and 11 years old are recommended to inhale 2 puffs by mouth two times a day of Asmanex HFA 50 mcg.

    Ingredients

    Mometasone furoate, a corticosteroid, is the active ingredient in Asmanex HFA.

    Contraindications

    Asmanex HFA should not be used as the primary asthma treatment or to treat sudden asthmatic episodes that require intensive treatment.

    Asmanex HFA should not be used if you are allergic to any of the ingredients in the inhaler.

    Cautions

    • Before starting treatment with Asmanex HFA, talk to your doctor:
      • About all the medications you take
      • About your allergies
      • About your medical history and conditions
      • If you are pregnant or have to plans to become pregnant
      • If you are breastfeeding or have plans to breastfeed
    • Fungal infections of the mouth and throat can be caused by the use of Asmanex HFA. It is recommended to rinse your mouth with water and spit it out after each use.
    • Asmanex HFA may worsen the symptoms of tuberculosis, fungal, bacterial, viral, or parasitic infections or herpes simplex of the eye. Chickenpox or measles that can become severe or fatal can occur in patients who are susceptible.
    • Asmanex HFA can cause hypercorticism and adrenal suppression. If these occur, your doctor may decide to take you off Asmanex HFA slowly.
    • Use caution when using Asmanex HFA with strong cytochrome P450 3A4 inhibitors. Ask your doctor if you are unsure whether or not you take these medications.
    • Paradoxical bronchospasm can occur during the use of Asmanex HFA. If this occurs, your doctor may stop treatment with Asmanex HFA and start a different treatment.
    • Serious allergic reactions can occur with the use of Asmanex HFA. Seek emergency care immediately if you develop a rash, trouble breathing, itching, or swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat.
    • Asmanex HFA can cause bone mineral density loss. 
    • Growth should be monitored in pediatric patients who use Asmanex HFA. 
    • Asmanex HFA can cause vision problems such as glaucoma and cataracts. 

    Side Effects

    Asmanex HFA can cause the following side effects: nasopharyngitis, headache, sinusitis, bronchitis, and flu.
