Description
The combination birth control medication, Brevicon (norethindrone/ethinyl estradiol), is an oral contraceptive prescribed to prevent pregnancy.
The brand product is no longer available in the US; however, alternatives may be available.
Directions
Take Brevicon as directed.
Refer to the medication guide that comes with your prescription for additional instructions for use.

Ingredients
The active ingredients in Brevicon are norethindrone and ethinyl estradiol.

Contraindications
Do not take birth control medication if any of the following apply to you:
- Uncontrolled high blood pressure
- Heart disease, coronary artery disease, or problems with circulation (especially with diabetes)
- Undiagnosed vaginal bleeding
- Liver disease or cancer
- Severe migraines
- You are also taking certain medications for hepatitis C
- You will be having major surgery
- You smoke and are older than 35 years of age
- History of heart attack, stroke, or a blood clot
- History of jaundice due to pregnancy or birth control medication
- Breast, uterine, cervical, or vaginal cancer
Cautions
- Smoking cigarettes, especially if you are older than 35 years of age, increases the risk of serious cardiovascular side effects (heart attack, stroke, blood clot) from oral contraceptives.
- Before you start taking Brevicon, consult your doctor about:
- All the medications you take, including prescription and over-the-counter medications, vitamins, supplements, and herbals
- Your allergies
- Your current health problems and past medical history
- If you are pregnant or breastfeeding
- Oral contraceptives do not provide protection against HIV infections or other sexually transmitted diseases. Condoms can offer protection.
Side Effects
Heart attack; stroke; blood clots; high blood pressure; liver issues; nausea; vomiting; breast changes or tenderness; breakthrough bleeding; depression or other changes in mood; swelling in the feet, ankles, or hands; headache; and problems with contact lenses are possible Brevicon side effects; however other side effects can also occur.
Call your doctor right away if you have side effects that bother you or won’t go away.
