Description
Clomicalm (clomipramine hydrochloride) is a tricyclic antidepressant formulated for veterinary use in dogs, primarily indicated for the treatment of separation anxiety in conjunction with a behavior modification program. It is also sometimes used off-label for compulsive disorders and noise phobias. Clomicalm acts by inhibiting the reuptake of serotonin and norepinephrine in the central nervous system, helping to stabilize mood and reduce anxiety-related behaviors. It is approved for use in dogs older than 6 months and weighing more than 2.5 kg.
Directions
Clomicalm is administered orally, typically at a starting dose of 1 to 2 mg/kg twice daily, or as prescribed by a veterinarian. The tablets can be given with or without food. It is important to maintain consistency in dosing time and duration. Behavioral improvement is generally observed within the first few weeks of treatment, although optimal results require concurrent behavioral therapy. Do not discontinue abruptly; tapering may be needed to avoid withdrawal symptoms.
Ingredients
Each Clomicalm tablet contains:
- Clomipramine hydrochloride
- Available strengths include:
- 5 mg, 20 mg, 40 mg, and 80 mg tablets
Inactive ingredients may include lactose, starch, and other excipients to aid in tablet formulation and stability.

Cautions

Clomicalm may lower the seizure threshold; use with care in predisposed breeds. Avoid combining with other serotonergic medications unless under veterinary supervision, due to the risk of serotonin syndrome. Safety in pregnant or lactating dogs has not been established.
