What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

    Description

Cordran Tape contains flurandrenolide, a potent topical corticosteroid embedded in a transparent, occlusive plastic surgical tape. It is designed to treat inflammatory and pruritic manifestations of corticosteroid-responsive dermatoses, particularly in areas where standard topical formulations may not adhere well or provide sufficient occlusion. The tape allows for sustained delivery of medication directly to the lesion, enhancing absorption and efficacy while providing a protective barrier.

    Directions

Apply Cordran Tape directly over the affected area with the medicated side in contact with the skin. Cut the tape to the appropriate size, ensuring it completely covers the lesion. It may be left in place for up to 12 hours and then replaced with a new piece if needed. Treatment duration should be based on clinical response and reassessed periodically. Avoid use under occlusive dressings unless directed by a healthcare provider.

    Ingredients

Each square centimeter of Cordran Tape contains 4 mcg of flurandrenolide in a polyethylene film. The tape is also composed of an acrylic ester copolymer adhesive and backing film to ensure flexibility and adherence.

    Contraindications

Cordran Tape is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to flurandrenolide or any component of the formulation. It should not be used in the treatment of viral, fungal, or bacterial skin infections, or in patients with untreated tuberculosis or perioral dermatitis.

    Cautions

Long-term use of topical corticosteroids may lead to local adverse effects such as skin atrophy, striae, or telangiectasia, particularly with occlusive application. Use with caution in pediatric patients due to the potential for systemic absorption and hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis suppression. Avoid use on the face, groin, or axillae unless directed by a healthcare professional. Do not apply to weeping or exudative lesions, or areas of skin breakdown.

    Side Effects

    Commonly reported side effects include:

    • Burning, itching, or irritation at the application site
    • Dryness or folliculitis
    • Skin atrophy or striae with prolonged use
    • Contact dermatitis
    • Perioral dermatitis or acneiform eruptions Rare systemic effects may occur with prolonged or extensive use.
