Directions
Take Dexilant exactly as prescribed, once daily, with or without food. Swallow the capsule whole and do not chew it. If you cannot swallow the capsule, open it and sprinkle the granules on 1 tablespoon of applesauce, then swallow immediately without chewing. The granules may also be given with water using an oral syringe or feeding tube.
The usual dose depends on why you are taking it. For erosive esophagitis, the standard dosage is 60 mg once daily for up to 8 weeks to heal erosive esophagitis. For heartburn relief, maintenance treatment, or non-erosive GERD, the standard dosage is 30 mg once daily. People with moderate liver problems are usually limited to 30 mg once daily.
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and do not take two doses at once.
Ingredients
The active ingredient is dexlansoprazole. The inactive ingredients may include sugar spheres, magnesium carbonate, sucrose, low-substituted hydroxypropyl cellulose, titanium dioxide, hydroxypropyl cellulose, hypromellose 2910, talc, methacrylic acid copolymers, polyethylene glycol 8000, triethyl citrate, polysorbate 80, and colloidal silicon dioxide. The capsule shell may contain hypromellose, carrageenan, potassium chloride, titanium dioxide, and coloring agents (FD and C Blue No. 2 and/or black ferric oxide, depending on the shell color).
Cautions
Before using this medication, you may want to consult a healthcare provider about the following:
- Any existing health conditions
- Any allergies
- A list of all medications currently being taken
Feeling better while taking Dexilant does not rule out a more serious stomach condition. Tell your provider if your symptoms continue, return quickly after treatment, or include trouble swallowing, ongoing stomach pain, unexplained weight loss, vomiting, or bloody or black stools.
PPIs carry a risk of kidney inflammation, also called acute tubulointerstitial nephritis, which can occur at any time during treatment. Tell your provider if you have decreased urination or blood in the urine.
PPI use may increase the risk of diarrhea caused by Clostridioides difficile bacteria. Contact your provider if you develop watery stools, stomach pain, and fever that do not improve.
Long-term or high-dose PPI therapy may increase the risk of bone fractures, low magnesium levels, and low vitamin B12. Your provider may monitor these levels and recommend using the lowest effective dose for the shortest time needed.
Serious skin reactions, such as Stevens-Johnson syndrome and toxic epidermal necrolysis, and lupus-like reactions have been reported with PPIs.
Dexilant should not be used with rilpivirine. It can also affect medicines whose absorption depends on stomach acid, such as certain antifungals, some HIV medicines, and iron. It may also increase levels of methotrexate and interact with drugs such as warfarin and tacrolimus.
Because PPIs raise stomach pH, they can affect certain lab tests, including those used to investigate neuroendocrine tumors, such as chromogranin A. Tell the laboratory or your provider that you take Dexilant if such testing is planned.
Long-term use, especially beyond a year, can lead to growths in the stomach lining called fundic gland polyps. Using the shortest effective course of treatment helps reduce this risk.
Tell your provider if you have liver problems, or if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Dexilant is not recommended for children under 2 years of age. Store at room temperature, 20°C to 25°C (68°F to 77°F), and keep out of reach of children.
Contraindications
Avoid taking or using this medication if any of the following apply:
- A known allergy or hypersensitivity to dexlansoprazole or to any other ingredient of the product.
- Using it together with rilpivirine-containing products, a type of HIV medication.
Side Effects
Common side effects of Dexilant include:
- Diarrhea
- Abdominal, or stomach, pain
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Gas, also called flatulence
- Upper respiratory tract infection
- Headache
- Cold-like symptoms, also called nasopharyngitis
Stop taking Dexilant and get medical help if you have signs of a serious allergic reaction, such as swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, trouble breathing, wheezing, hives, or signs of a severe skin reaction, such as a blistering rash. Contact your healthcare provider for signs of kidney problems, such as reduced urination, blood in the urine, or swelling; watery diarrhea with fever; symptoms of low magnesium, such as muscle cramps, tremors, or an irregular heartbeat; or new joint pain or skin changes that could suggest a lupus-like reaction. Also, let your healthcare provider know if your reflux symptoms do not improve or come back.
