What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

    Description

Dristan is a nasal decongestant that temporarily relieves nasal congestion caused by allergies, sinusitis, or the common cold. It belongs to a class of medications known as alpha-adrenergic agonists, which constrict blood vessels in the nasal passages, reducing swelling and congestion.

Nasal congestion is a common symptom of upper respiratory tract (URI) infections and respiratory allergies. By constricting blood vessels in the sinuses, it causes the relaxation of sinus passages, which helps to relieve congestion.

    Directions

Shake the bottle gently before use and remove the protective cap. Hold the bottle upright and insert the nozzle into one nostril while closing the other with your finger. Press firmly on the spray pump to release the medication while inhaling gently through your nose. Repeat the process for the other nostril if required.

    Ingredients

The active ingredient in Dristan is oxymetazoline.

    Interactions

Common drug-drug interactions of Dristan can include:

    Cautions

Do not use Dristan for longer than three days in a row. Doing so may cause rebound congestion, where the nasal passages become even more congested after discontinuing the medication.

Before using Dristan, inform the prescriber about any medical conditions, allergies, or medications. Certain medical conditions, such as high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, thyroid disorders, or urinary problems, may require special precautions or dose adjustments when using oxymetazoline.

If congestion does not improve or worsens after several days of using oxymetazoline, consult your healthcare provider for further evaluation and guidance. They can assess symptoms and determine if alternative treatments or further medical interventions are necessary.
