What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

    Description

    Enbrel (etanercept) subcutaneous injection is used to treat adults who have rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, and plaque psoriasis.

    Enbrel is also used to treat pediatric patients who are at least 2 years of age with polyarticular juvenile idiopathic arthritis and juvenile psoriatic arthritis and pediatric patients who are at least 4 years of age with plaque psoriasis.

    Enbrel is available in single-dose, prefilled syringes containing 25 mg/0.5 mL or 50 mg/mL. It is also available in a single-dose, prefilled SureClick® autoinjector containing 50 mg/mL.

    Directions

    Use Enbrel as directed by your doctor. Your doctor will determine an appropriate dose and treatment duration for you depending on your medical condition.

    A healthcare provider will teach you or a caregiver how to properly store, prepare, administer, and discard Enbrel. Enbrel should be injected underneath the skin in the thigh, abdomen, or upper arm.

    Ingredients

    The active ingredient in Enbrel is etanercept.

    Inactive ingredients include L-arginine hydrochloride, sodium chloride, and sucrose.

    Contraindications

    Patients with sepsis should not receive Enbrel injection.

    Cautions

    • Enbrel contains the following FDA Boxed Warning:
      • The risk of serious infections that require hospitalization or cause death, including tuberculosis (TB), bacterial sepsis, invasive fungal infections, and other opportunistic infections, is increased.
      • Enbrel should be stopped if a patient develops a serious infection or sepsis while receiving Enbrel therapy.
      • A latent test for TB should be performed. TB treatment should be started before starting Enbrel therapy if the test is positive.
      • All patients should be monitored for TB while they are receiving Enbrel, even if the first latent TB test result is negative.
    • Before you begin treatment with Enbrel, talk to your doctor about:
      • All the prescription and over-the-counter medications you take
      • Your allergies
      • Your current health problems and past medical history, including
      • Your pregnancy or breastfeeding status
    • Enbrel is associated with the following warnings and precautions:
      • Demyelinating disease that develops or gets worse
      • Lymphoma
      • Congestive heart failure that develops or gets worse
      • Low blood cell and platelet counts
      • Serious allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis
      • Lupus-like syndrome or autoimmune liver inflammation

    Side Effects

    Infections and reactions at the injection site are common Enbrel side effects; however, other side effects may also occur. Immediately inform your doctor of any side effects that bother you or won’t go away.
