What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

    Description

Galliprant (grapiprant) is a prescription medication used to control pain and inflammation caused by osteoarthritis in dogs. It belongs to a newer class of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) called piprants. Instead of blocking COX enzymes, it blocks the EP4 receptor involved with triggering arthritis pain and swelling. Galliprant comes as a tablet and should only be used with guidance from a licensed veterinarian.

    Directions

Give Galliprant exactly as prescribed by a veterinarian. The usual dose is 0.9 mg per pound of body weight (2 mg/kg) once daily.

The 20 mg and 60 mg tablets are scored and may be split in half to provide the appropriate dose. The 100 mg tablet is not scored and should not be broken.

Dogs weighing less than 8 pounds cannot be accurately dosed with Galliprant. Use the lowest effective dose for the shortest time needed, and follow the veterinarian’s instructions regarding how much medication to give and how long treatment should continue.

    Ingredients

The active ingredient in Galliprant is grapiprant. A full list of inactive ingredients is not provided in the drug label, but the tablets contain desiccated pork liver as a flavoring agent.

    Cautions

Before giving this medication, you may want to consult a veterinarian about the following:

    • Any existing health conditions
    • Any allergies
    • A list of all medications currently being taken

Galliprant is for use in dogs only. It should not be given together with other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) or corticosteroids.

Not for human use. Keep this and all medications out of reach of children. Consult a physician immediately in case of accidental ingestion.

The safe use of Galliprant has not been evaluated in dogs younger than 9 months of age, dogs weighing less than 8 pounds, breeding dogs, or pregnant or nursing dogs.

Like other NSAIDs, Galliprant may affect the stomach, kidneys, and liver. Dogs that are dehydrated, taking diuretics, or living with kidney, liver, or heart disease may have a greater risk of side effects.

A veterinarian may recommend blood tests before starting treatment and regular monitoring when Galliprant is used long term.

    Contraindications

Avoid taking or using this medication if the dog has a hypersensitivity (allergy) to grapiprant.

    Side Effects

Common side effects of Galliprant may include:

    • Vomiting
    • Diarrhea or soft stool
    • Decreased appetite
    • Tiredness or low energy

More serious side effects are possible, especially with long-term use. Contact a veterinarian if the dog has vomit or stool containing blood, black or tarry stools, ongoing appetite loss, unusual tiredness, or signs of liver or kidney problems, such as yellowing of the gums or changes in drinking and urination.

    Frequently Asked Questions about Galliprant

    What is Galliprant?

Galliprant is a prescription veterinary nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug containing grapiprant. It is used to control pain and inflammation associated with osteoarthritis in dogs.

    How does Galliprant work?

Galliprant blocks the prostaglandin E2 EP4 receptor, which plays an important role in osteoarthritis pain and inflammation. Unlike traditional NSAIDs, it does not primarily inhibit cyclooxygenase enzymes.

    Which animals can take Galliprant?

Galliprant is approved only for dogs. In the United States, its safe use has not been established in dogs younger than nine months or weighing less than 8 pounds, or in dogs used for breeding, pregnancy, or nursing.

    How is Galliprant given?

Galliprant is given by mouth once daily as directed by a veterinarian. The dose is based on the dog’s weight, and tablets should be given exactly as prescribed.

Should Galliprant be given with food?

Galliprant may be given with or without food. Giving it with food may help dogs that develop mild stomach upset, although food can reduce the amount of medication absorbed.

What are the common side effects of Galliprant?

Commonly reported side effects include vomiting, diarrhea or soft stools, reduced appetite, and lethargy. Contact the veterinarian if these symptoms persist, become severe, or are accompanied by blood in the stool or vomit.

    Can Galliprant cause serious reactions?

Yes. Although uncommon, serious gastrointestinal, kidney, or liver problems may occur. Warning signs include repeated vomiting, black stools, marked appetite loss, increased thirst or urination, yellowing of the eyes or gums, weakness, or unusual behavior.

Can Galliprant be combined with other pain medications?

Galliprant should not be combined with another NSAID or a corticosteroid unless specifically directed by a veterinarian. Tell the veterinarian about all medications and supplements the dog receives because interactions may increase the risk of adverse effects.

Is monitoring needed during Galliprant treatment?

A veterinarian may recommend an examination and baseline blood or urine tests before treatment, followed by periodic monitoring during long-term use. Dogs with existing kidney, liver, heart, or gastrointestinal disease may require additional caution.

What should be done if a dose is missed?

Give the missed dose when remembered unless it is nearly time for the next dose. Do not give two doses at once. If an overdose or accidental ingestion occurs, contact a veterinarian or animal poison-control service promptly.
