Description
Noroxin contains norfloxacin, a broad-spectrum fluoroquinolone antibiotic indicated for the treatment of specific bacterial infections. It is primarily used to treat uncomplicated and complicated urinary tract infections (UTIs), including cystitis and prostatitis, caused by susceptible Gram-negative and some Gram-positive organisms. Norfloxacin acts by inhibiting bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, enzymes essential for DNA replication, transcription, and repair, ultimately leading to bacterial cell death.
Directions
The usual adult oral dosage is 400 mg twice daily, taken at least one hour before or two hours after meals to optimize absorption. Therapy duration typically ranges from 3 to 10 days, depending on the infection site and severity. For chronic bacterial prostatitis, a longer course (up to 28 days) may be required. Patients should drink plenty of fluids during treatment and avoid taking Noroxin with dairy products, calcium-enriched juices, or antacids containing magnesium or aluminum.
Ingredients
Each Noroxin tablet contains 400 mg of norfloxacin as the active ingredient. Inactive ingredients may include microcrystalline cellulose, corn starch, magnesium stearate, hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, titanium dioxide, and polyethylene glycol, depending on manufacturer formulation.
Contraindications
Noroxin is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to norfloxacin, other quinolones, or any component of the product. It is also contraindicated in children, adolescents, and pregnant or breastfeeding women due to the risk of musculoskeletal adverse effects. Avoid use in patients with a history of tendinitis or tendon rupture associated with fluoroquinolone use.
Cautions
Use with caution in patients with renal impairment, central nervous system disorders (such as epilepsy), or risk factors for QT prolongation. Noroxin may increase the risk of tendinitis and tendon rupture, especially in elderly patients or those on corticosteroids. It should be discontinued immediately if the patient experiences tendon pain, swelling, or inflammation. Patients should avoid excessive exposure to sunlight or artificial UV light due to the risk of photosensitivity.
Side Effects
Possible side effects include:
- Nausea, diarrhea, or abdominal pain
- Photosensitivity reactions
- Tendonitis or tendon rupture (rare but serious)
- Rare: QT prolongation, peripheral neuropathy, hypersensitivity reactions
