What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

    Description

    Pennsaid (diclofenac sodium) topical solution 2% w/w, is a prescription nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that is applied topically to treat knee osteoarthritis.

    Pennsaid comes in a topical solution.

    Diclofenac sodium is Pennsaid’s generic name.

    Directions

    Use Pennsaid as directed by the prescribing doctor, who will determine appropriate dosing for you.

    Recommended dosing:

    Apply 2 pumps on each painful knee two times a day; apply evenly around the front, back, and sides of the knee(s); ensure the skin is clean and dry before applying. Thoroughly wash your hands after use. Let the area completely dry before covering with clothing or applying sunscreen, insect repellant, cosmetics, or other topical products and medications. Avoid skin-to-skin contact until completely dried. Do not get the medication in your eyes, mouth, or nose.

    Store Pennsaid at 25°C (77°F) and out of reach of children.

    Ingredients

    Diclofenac sodium is the active ingredient in Pennsaid.

    Dimethyl sulfoxide USP (DMSO, 45.5% w/w), ethanol, purified water, propylene glycol, and hydroxypropyl cellulose are the inactive ingredients included.

    Contraindications

    Pennsaid should not be used in patients who meet the following criteria:

    • Are allergic to diclofenac or to any of its ingredients
    • Have had asthma, hives, or allergic-type reactions from aspirin or other NSAIDs
    • In the setting of coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery

    Cautions

    • Pennsaid contains the following FDA Boxed Warning:
      • An increased risk of heart attack, stroke, or other serious and potentially fatal cardiovascular thrombotic events with NSAID use. This risk may occur early in treatment and may become greater with duration of use
      • Pennsaid use should be avoided in the setting of CABG surgery
      • Increased risk of bleeding, ulceration, and perforation of the stomach or other potentially fatal gastrointestinal (GI) adverse effects with NSAID use. These events can occur at any time during use and without warning symptoms. Patients with a history of peptic ulcer disease and/or GI bleeding and elderly patients are at greater risk for these events
    • Before you start using Pennsaid, discuss the following with your doctor:
      • All the medications you use, including other topical products, prescription and nonprescription medications, vitamins, and supplements
      • Any allergies you have
      • Any Your current health problems you have
      • Your past medical history
      • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding
    • Pennsaid contains the following warnings and precautions:
      • Liver issues
      • High blood pressure
      • Heart failure and swelling
      • Kidney issues
      • Anaphylaxis
      • Worsening of asthma due to aspirin sensitivity
      • Skin reactions that are serious
      • Drug reaction with eosinophilia and systemic symptoms (DRESS)
      • Fetal harm; Women who are 30+ weeks pregnant should avoid NSAID use
      • Anemia
      • Avoid artificial or natural light exposure of the treated knee(s)
      • Do not take other NSAIDs

    Side Effects

    Pennsaid side effects include but are not limited to application site reactions.
