ProZinc Pet Insulin

What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

    Directions

ProZinc is administered via subcutaneous injection. The recommended initial dosage is:

    • Cats: 0.1–0.3 units per pound (0.2–0.7 units/kg) once daily, typically starting at 1–3 units per injection
    • Dogs: 0.2–0.5 units/kg once or twice daily, individualized based on blood glucose curves

Administer injections at the same time each day. Gently roll (do not shake) the vial to resuspend the insulin before withdrawing the dose. Injections should be given in alternating sites on the lateral thorax or abdomen.

Glucose levels should be monitored frequently during the initial dosing and adjusted by the veterinarian based on clinical signs and blood glucose readings.

    Ingredients

    Each mL of ProZinc contains:

    • Recombinant human insulin 40 units/mL
    • Protamine sulfate
    • Zinc chloride
    • Glycerin
    • Phenol (preservative)
    • Water for injection
    • Hydrochloric acid or sodium hydroxide (for pH adjustment)

    Contraindications

    ProZinc is contraindicated in:

    • Animals sensitive to insulin or any excipients
    • Episodes of hypoglycemia (use with caution and under supervision in animals with a history of severe low blood glucose)
    • Use in animals not diagnosed with diabetes mellitus

    Cautions

    • Hypoglycemia is the most common risk and may present as lethargy, ataxia, disorientation, or seizures—requires immediate treatment with glucose.
    • Use with caution in pregnant or lactating animals, or those with concurrent illnesses (e.g., renal or hepatic disease).
    • Do not switch insulin products without veterinary supervision due to variations in onset, peak, and duration.
    • Regular monitoring of blood glucose levels, clinical signs, and fructosamine concentrations is essential for safe and effective use.
    • Only use U-40 insulin syringes calibrated specifically for 40 units/mL insulin.

    Side Effects

    Common side effects include:

    • Hypoglycemia (lethargy, weakness, tremors, seizures)
    • Injection site reactions (rare)
    • Weight gain (with overdosage or tight glucose control)

Less common adverse effects may include:

    • Hyperglycemia (if underdosed)
    • Insulin resistance or antibody formation (rare)
    • Allergic reactions
