Description
ProZinc is a protamine zinc insulin (PZI) formulation approved for the management of diabetes mellitus in cats and dogs. It contains recombinant human insulin complexed with protamine and zinc to prolong absorption and action. ProZinc is an intermediate- to long-acting insulin, providing sustained glucose control with once or twice daily subcutaneous injections. It is typically used as part of a comprehensive veterinary diabetes management plan, including dietary control and regular blood glucose monitoring.

Directions
ProZinc is administered via subcutaneous injection. The recommended initial dosage is:
- Cats: 0.1–0.3 units per pound (0.2–0.7 units/kg) once daily, typically starting at 1–3 units per injection
- Dogs: 0.2–0.5 units/kg once or twice daily, individualized based on blood glucose curves
Administer injections at the same time each day. Gently roll (do not shake) the vial to resuspend the insulin before withdrawing the dose. Injections should be given in alternating sites on the lateral thorax or abdomen.
Glucose levels should be monitored frequently during the initial dosing and adjusted by the veterinarian based on clinical signs and blood glucose readings.
Ingredients
Each mL of ProZinc contains:
- Recombinant human insulin 40 units/mL
- Hydrochloric acid or sodium hydroxide (for pH adjustment)
Contraindications
ProZinc is contraindicated in:
- Animals sensitive to insulin or any excipients
- Episodes of hypoglycemia (use with caution and under supervision in animals with a history of severe low blood glucose)
- Use in animals not diagnosed with diabetes mellitus
Cautions
- Hypoglycemia is the most common risk and may present as lethargy, ataxia, disorientation, or seizures—requires immediate treatment with glucose.
- Use with caution in pregnant or lactating animals, or those with concurrent illnesses (e.g., renal or hepatic disease).
- Do not switch insulin products without veterinary supervision due to variations in onset, peak, and duration.
- Regular monitoring of blood glucose levels, clinical signs, and fructosamine concentrations is essential for safe and effective use.
- Only use U-40 insulin syringes calibrated specifically for 40 units/mL insulin.
Side Effects
Common side effects include:
- Hypoglycemia (lethargy, weakness, tremors, seizures)
- Injection site reactions (rare)
- Weight gain (with overdosage or tight glucose control)
Less common adverse effects may include:
- Hyperglycemia (if underdosed)
- Insulin resistance or antibody formation (rare)
