What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

    Description

Qinlock (ripretinib) is used to treat an advanced type of cancer called gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) in adults. It’s typically used when the cancer has already been treated with 3 or more other targeted medicines.

This prescription medication works by blocking certain signals inside cancer cells that help the tumor grow. This especially affects those involving proteins called KIT and PDGFRA. In doing so, Qinlock may help slow tumour growth and spread.

    Directions

After you buy Qinlock (ripretinib) with a valid prescription from your doctor, you will typically be advised to take 150 mg by mouth once daily, with or without food.

Ensure you take it at the same time each day and swallow tablets whole without crushing, breaking, or chewing them. Doctors typically direct patients to continue this medication until the cancer worsens or the side effects become too severe.

Administer a missed dose within 8 hours of your regular time. If it’s been longer, skip it and take your next dose at the usual time. The latter also applies if you vomit after a dose.

You may need a dose adjustment (100 mg once daily) if you experience side effects.

    Ingredients

The active ingredient in Qinlock is ripretinib.

    Cautions

Ensure your blood pressure is controlled and in a healthy range before starting Qinlock. Your doctor may monitor your blood pressure during treatment.

Before starting this medication, it’s essential that your provider checks your heart’s pumping function. You may also need continuous heart checks during treatment.

Ensure routine skin exams before and during treatment to detect signs of new skin cancers early.

If you develop tenderness, redness, swelling, or skin changes on your hands or feet, notify your doctor immediately. In some cases, you may need a treatment pause or dose adjustment.

Qinlock can negatively affect wound healing. You may need to stop Qinlock at least 1 week before elective surgery. You may also need to wait for at least 2 weeks after major surgery to restart the medication and until your wounds are healed.

If you’re a female who can become pregnant or a male with a partner who can become pregnant, your provider may do a pregnancy test before you start this medication. Since Qinlock can harm an unborn baby, effective birth control is recommended during treatment and for 1 week after the last dose.

Do not breastfeed during treatment and for 1 week after the final dose.

Qinlock may interact with certain drugs, such as strong CYP3A inducers. These may reduce Qinlock's effectiveness. If you rely on taking a strong CYP3A inhibitor, your medical provider may monitor you more closely for side effects.

    Contraindications

According to the FDA, there are no known contraindications.

    Side Effects

Relatively common, but often manageable side effects include hair loss, fatigue, nausea, constipation, and diarrhea.

More serious, but not as frequently reported, Qinlock side effects range from hand–foot skin reaction, new skin cancers, and hypertension, to heart problems and risk of impaired wound healing.

You may experience additional Qinlock side effects. Contact your doctor if you notice any persistent or concerning side effects from Qinlock, or if you have any additional questions about Qinlock’s cost, coverage, and more.
