What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

    Description

Solodyn ER (minocycline HCl, USP) is a prescription extended-release tetracycline-class antibiotic used to treat inflammatory lesions of non-nodular moderate to severe acne vulgaris in patients 12 years of age and older. Inflammatory acne lesions include red, swollen bumps and pus-filled spots.

What is Solodyn ER used for? Solodyn ER is used for inflammatory acne lesions. It has not been shown to treat non-inflammatory acne lesions, such as blackheads and whiteheads.

Minocycline works by helping reduce the growth of certain bacteria associated with acne and by reducing inflammation in the skin. Solodyn ER is not used as a general antibiotic for infections and should only be taken for the condition prescribed by your healthcare provider.

How is Solodyn ER different from regular minocycline? Solodyn ER is an extended-release form of minocycline, which means it is designed to release the medication gradually over time. Do not crush, chew, or split the tablet, as this can affect how the medication is released.

    Directions

You can buy Solodyn ER with a valid prescription from your healthcare provider. The usual recommended dose is taken once daily for 12 weeks, based on body weight. Your doctor will choose the appropriate tablet strength for you.

How should I take Solodyn ER? Take Solodyn ER exactly as prescribed. Swallow the tablet whole with enough fluid to reduce the risk of throat or esophagus irritation. Solodyn ER may be taken with or without food. If it causes stomach upset, your healthcare provider may recommend taking it with food.

What should I do if I miss a dose? If you miss a dose, take it as directed by your healthcare provider or pharmacist. Do not take extra tablets to make up for a missed dose unless your doctor tells you to.

Can I take Solodyn ER with vitamins or antacids? Some products can reduce how much minocycline your body absorbs. These include antacids, multivitamins, mineral supplements, iron, calcium, magnesium, aluminum, zinc, and bismuth-containing products. Ask your pharmacist how to separate these products from your Solodyn ER dose.

    Ingredients

The active ingredient in Solodyn ER is minocycline hydrochloride, USP.

What does “HCl” mean in Solodyn ER? HCl stands for hydrochloride, which is a salt form of minocycline used in the medication. This helps form the active drug product but does not change the intended therapeutic use of minocycline.

Inactive ingredients may vary by strength, manufacturer, or country of supply. Check the product package, patient leaflet, or ask your pharmacist if you have allergies, lactose intolerance, dye sensitivities, or other ingredient-related concerns.

    Cautions

Before taking Solodyn ER, tell your healthcare provider about your full medical history, especially if you have liver disease, kidney disease, increased pressure in the brain, vision problems, autoimmune conditions, or a history of severe medication reactions. Also tell your doctor about all prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, minerals, and supplements you take.

Can Solodyn ER make me dizzy? Yes. Minocycline may cause dizziness, lightheadedness, or vertigo, which is a spinning sensation. Avoid driving or operating machinery until you know how Solodyn ER affects you.

Can Solodyn ER make my skin more sensitive to the sun? Yes. Minocycline can make some people more sensitive to sunlight. Limit unnecessary sun exposure, avoid tanning beds, and use protective clothing and sunscreen when outdoors. Contact your healthcare provider if you develop severe sunburn, blistering, or an unusual skin reaction.

Is Solodyn ER safe during pregnancy? Solodyn ER is generally avoided during pregnancy. Tell your doctor right away if you become pregnant while taking Solodyn ER. Your healthcare provider should review the risks and discuss other acne treatment options.

    Contraindications

Do not take Solodyn ER if you are allergic to minocycline, any tetracycline-class antibiotic, or any ingredient in the product. Signs of an allergic reaction may include rash, hives, itching, swelling, dizziness, or trouble breathing.

Who should not take Solodyn ER? Solodyn ER should not be used by people with a known allergy to minocycline or other tetracycline antibiotics. It is also generally avoided during pregnancy because tetracycline-class antibiotics can affect fetal bone development and may cause permanent tooth discoloration when used during tooth development.

Your healthcare provider should review whether Solodyn ER is appropriate if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, breastfeeding, or treating acne in a child.
