What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

    Description

Synalar (fluocinolone acetonide) Cream is used topically to treat inflammatory and itchy skin conditions that are responsive to corticosteroids.

Synalar Cream, 0.025% comes in a 120 gram tube.

    Directions

Use Synalar Cream as directed by your doctor. If you have any questions or concerns, talk to your doctor or pharmacist.

Generally, a thin layer of Synalar Cream is applied to the affected area(s) 2-4 times daily, depending on the severity of the condition being treated. Your doctor will tell you how often you should apply the cream and how long your treatment will last.

Do not get the cream in your eyes.

    Ingredients

Fluocinolone acetonide, a corticosteroid, is the active ingredient found in Synalar Cream.

    Contraindications

Do not use Synalar Cream if you have an allergy to any of its ingredients.

    Cautions

    • Before you begin using Synalar Cream, talk to your doctor about:
      • All the medications you take
      • Your allergies
      • Your current health conditions and past medical history
      • Your pregnancy or breastfeeding status
    • Reversible hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis suppression can occur with the systemic absorption of topical corticosteroids, resulting in Cushing’s syndrome, high blood sugar, and glucose in the urine. Systemic absorption can be enhanced with the use of more potent steroids, applying the cream over large surface areas, using the cream long-term, and using occlusive dressings.
    • Children may absorb more of the cream and have a higher risk of systemic toxicity.
    • Stop using Synalar Cream if irritation occurs.
    • Using Synalar Cream long-term can cause skin tissue breakdown. This may also occur with short-term use on the face or on areas where two skin areas rub against other.

    Side Effects

Synalar Cream can cause the following side effects: burning, itching, irritation, dryness, inflamed hair follicles, excessive hair growth, acne, pigmentation changes, rash around the mouth, allergic contact dermatitis, skin maceration, secondary infection, skin breakdown, stretch marks, and heat rash. Call your doctor immediately if you have side effects that bother you or won’t resolve.
