Description
Tavist contains clemastine fumarate, a first-generation antihistamine used for the temporary relief of symptoms associated with hay fever (allergic rhinitis), upper respiratory allergies, and the common cold. As an H1 receptor antagonist, clemastine helps reduce symptoms such as sneezing, runny nose, itchy or watery eyes, and itching of the throat or nose. Tavist is known for its relatively long duration of action among first-generation antihistamines and may also exert mild sedative effects due to its ability to cross the blood-brain barrier.

Directions
Adults and children 12 years of age and older should take 1 tablet (1.34 mg clemastine fumarate) every 12 hours, not to exceed 2 tablets in 24 hours. Children under 12 years of age should use clemastine-containing products only under the supervision of a healthcare provider. Tablets should be taken with water and may be administered with or without food.
Ingredients
Each tablet of Tavist contains 1.34 mg of clemastine fumarate as the active ingredient. Inactive ingredients may include lactose, microcrystalline cellulose, magnesium stearate, and other tablet excipients depending on the manufacturer.
Contraindications
Tavist is contraindicated in individuals with known hypersensitivity to clemastine or other antihistamines of similar chemical structure. It should not be used in newborns or premature infants, or by breastfeeding mothers, as clemastine may be excreted in breast milk. Use is also contraindicated in patients receiving monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) or within 14 days of stopping such treatment.
Cautions
Use with caution in patients with glaucoma, peptic ulcer, prostatic hypertrophy, or bladder neck obstruction, as antihistamines may exacerbate these conditions. Clemastine may cause drowsiness; therefore, patients should avoid driving or operating heavy machinery until they know how the drug affects them. Alcohol and other central nervous system depressants may enhance sedative effects. Elderly patients may be more sensitive to adverse anticholinergic effects.
Side Effects
Common side effects may include:
- Dry mouth, nose, or throat
- Nausea or gastrointestinal discomfort
- Nervousness or restlessness (especially in children)
