What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

    Description

Tavneos is used to treat severe active ANCA-associated vasculitis in adults. This rare autoimmune disease causes inflammation of blood vessels and has two main types: granulomatosis with polyangiitis and microscopic polyangiitis. This medication helps reduce inflammation and immune-system overactivity that causes blood-vessel damage. It does so by blocking the C5a receptor, a component of the immune system. Tavneos is used in addition to steroids and other standard treatments.

    Directions

You can buy Tavneos as a 10 mg oral capsule. Always take Tavneos exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Typically, patients take 30 mg (three capsules) twice daily, with food. This is a total of 6 capsules daily. Do not crush, chew, or open Tavneos capsules. If you miss a dose, wait until your next scheduled dose and do not double it. Your doctor may prescribe a lower dose of 30 mg (3 capsules) once daily if you also take certain medications that strongly affect liver enzymes (e.g., strong CYP3A4 inhibitors).

    Ingredients

The active ingredient in Tavneos is avacopan.

The inactive ingredients are polyethylene glycol 4000 (PEG-4000), polyoxyl-40 hydrogenated castor oil, gelatin, red iron oxide, yellow iron oxide, titanium dioxide, black printing ink, and polysorbate 80.

    Contraindications

Serious hypersensitivity to avacopan or to any of its active or inactive ingredients.

    Cautions

    • Inform your doctor of your complete medical history, including existing medical conditions, all the prescription and over-the-counter medications and supplements you are taking, and your allergies.
    • It’s essential to know that Tavneos can cause serious liver damage, including severely elevated liver enzymes. Your doctor will periodically monitor your liver before and during treatment and may stop or pause therapy if necessary. Tavneos is not recommended for people with active or uncontrolled chronic liver disease or cirrhosis, and people who previously had hepatitis B must use this medication with caution and under close monitoring only.
    • Do not take Tavneos if you’re allergic to one of its active or inactive ingredients. Seek immediate medical care if you experience allergy symptoms such as rash, itching, swelling, or trouble breathing. In the most severe cases, angioedema and anaphylaxis can be life-threatening.
    • You should be aware that Tavneos increases your risk of life-threatening infections, such as pneumonia and urinary tract infections. If you get frequent infections, have a history of serious infections, or have had exposure to or are at risk for tuberculosis, close monitoring is required. Your doctor will pause or stop the medication if necessary.

    Side Effects

Common, but usually manageable side effects of Tavneos include nausea, headache, high blood pressure, diarrhea, vomiting, rash, tiredness, stomach (abdominal) pain, dizziness, increased blood creatinine, and burning or prickling sensations.

More serious side effects include severe liver problems, serious infections (such as pneumonia or urinary tract infections), severe allergic reactions (including anaphylaxis and angioedema), and hepatitis B virus reactivation.

This is not an exhaustive list of Tavneos side effects. If you experience persistent or severe side effects of Tavneos, contact your healthcare provider immediately.
