What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

    Description

Trimbow is a combination medication (beclometasone/formoterol/glycopyrronium bromide) used for the treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma in adults.

Trimbow is available as an inhaler.

    Directions

Use Trimbow as directed by your doctor. Review the information that comes with your prescription and contact your doctor or pharmacy if you have any questions or concerns about the medication.

Trimbow is available in two different strengths. Your doctor will determine the appropriate strength for you based on the condition being treated and the use of other medications. Your doctor or other healthcare professional will teach you how to correctly use your inhaler.

Recommended and maximum dosing: Inhale two puffs by mouth two times a day.

    Ingredients

    Trimbow contains the following:

    • beclometasone (corticosteroid) - helps reduce inflammation for easier breathing
    • formoterol (long-acting beta-2 agonist) - helps the airway muscles relax, which keeps the airways open for easier breathing
    • glycopyrronium bromide (long-acting muscarinic receptor antagonist) - helps open the airways for easier breathing

    Contraindications

Do not use Trimbow if you are allergic to the medication or to any of its ingredients or excipients.

    Cautions

    • Before you begin using Trimbow, discuss the following with your doctor:
      • All the prescription and over-the-counter medications you take
      • Your allergies
      • Your current health conditions and past medical history
      • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding
    • Trimbow should not be used for an asthma attack or to treat sudden shortness of breath.
    • Allergic reactions, including angioedema (swelling, difficulty breathing or swallowing), hives, and rash, have occurred with Trimbow use. Seek medical care right away if you have trouble breathing, swelling of the face, lips, or tongue, rash, or any other sign or symptom of an allergic reaction.
    • Wheezing and shortness of breath can occur after Trimbow use and should be treated with a fast-acting inhaled bronchodilator (reliever). Stop using Trimbow and seek medical care.
    • Do not stop using Trimbow abruptly.
    • Patients with heart arrhythmias, idiopathic subvalvular aortic stenosis, hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy, severe heart disease, occlusive vascular diseases, arterial high blood pressure, aneurysm, thyroid problems, diabetes, pheochromocytoma, or untreated low blood potassium levels should exercise caution when using Trimbow.
    • COPD patients who use inhaled corticosteroids are at increased risk of pneumonia.
    • Using inhaled corticosteroids at high doses long term can cause systemic effects, including Cushing’s syndrome, Cushingoid features, adrenal suppression, growth retardation, decrease in bone mineral density, cataracts, glaucoma, psychomotor hyperactivity, sleep problems, anxiety, depression, or aggression.
    • Caution should be exercised when using Trimbow in patients with pulmonary tuberculosis or fungal or viral infections in the airways.
    • Patients with narrow-angle glaucoma, prostatic hyperplasia, or urinary retention should exercise caution when using Trimbow.
    • Using Trimbow long term is not recommended due to the anticholinergic effects of glycopyrronium.
    • After using Trimbow, rinse your mouth with water without swallowing it or brush your teeth, as this can prevent fungal infections of the mouth.
    • Vision problems such as blurred vision may occur.
    • Trimbow should be used with caution in patients with liver or kidney problems. Use only if the benefits outweigh the risks.
    • Low blood potassium levels can occur from beta-2 agonist treatment.
    • High blood sugar levels can occur due to the formoterol component. Blood sugar should be monitored as recommended.

    Side Effects

Changes in the sound of the voice, fungal infection of the mouth, muscle spasms, and dry mouth are potential Trimbow medication side effects. However, other side effects may also occur. Contact your doctor right away if you have side effects that bother you or won’t go away.
