What is a Generic Drug?
A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.
The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Description
Viramune XR (nevirapine) is used to treat adults with HIV-1 infection.
Viramune XR 400 mg tablets for oral administration may be obtained with a valid prescription.
Directions
Take Viramune XR as instructed by your doctor. If you have any questions or concerns about the medication, contact your doctor or pharmacy.
Your doctor will tell you how much Viramune XR you should take and for how long you should take it.
The tablets should be swallowed whole. Do not chew, crush, or break them.
Ingredients
Nevirapine is the active ingredient contained in each Viramune XR tablet. Inactive ingredients include lactose monohydrate, hypromellose, iron oxide, and magnesium stearate.
Contraindications
Patients with moderate or severe liver problems should avoid taking Viramune XR.
Viramune XR should not be used as part of post-exposure prophylaxis regimens.
Cautions
Viramune XR has the following FDA Boxed Warnings:
- Liver toxicity that can be fatal or non-fatal
- Skin reactions that can be fatal or non-fatal
- Viramune XR should be stopped if patients experience signs or symptoms of hepatitis, increased liver function tests with rash or other systemic symptoms, severe skin or allergic reactions, or rash with systemic symptoms. Patients should be monitored during the first 18 weeks of treatment. Because the risk for these events are greatest during the first 6 weeks of treatment, extra monitoring is needed during this period of time
- Before you start treatment with Viramune XR, inform your doctor of:
- All the prescription and nonprescription medications you take
- Your allergies
- Your current health conditions and past medical history
- Your pregnancy or breastfeeding status
- Patients should be monitored for immune reconstitution syndrome and redistribution of fat.
Side Effects
Rash and hepatitis are common side effects associated with Viramune XR; however, these are not the only side effects that can occur. Contact your doctor right away if you develop bothersome or persistent side effects.
