What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

    Description

    Omeprazole and sodium bicarbonate is a combination drug used:

    • For short-term treatment of active duodenal ulcers
    • For short-term treatment of active benign gastric ulcers
    • For the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
    • To maintain the healing of erosive esophagitis
    • To decrease the risk of upper gastrointestinal bleeding in patients who are critically ill

    Omeprazole and sodium bicarbonate is available in a capsule and as a powder for oral suspension. The strengths are 20 mg and 40 mg. Follow the instructions on the prescription label.

    Dosing for the short-term treatment of an active duodenal ulcer: 20 mg by mouth once daily for 4 weeks

    Dosing for the short-term treatment of an active benign gastric ulcer: 40 mg by mouth once daily for 4 to 8 weeks

    Dosing for GERD (no erosive esophagitis): 20 mg by mouth once daily for up to 4 weeks 

    Dosing for GERD (erosive esophagitis): 20 mg by mouth once daily for 4 to 8 weeks

    Dosing to maintain the healing of erosive esophagitis: 20 mg by mouth once daily

    Dosing to reduce the risk of upper gastrointestinal bleeding in patients who are critically ill (40 mg oral suspension only): 40 mg by mouth to start, then 40 mg by mouth 6 to 8 hours later and 40 mg by mouth once daily thereafter for 2 weeks

    Ingredients

    Omeprazole and sodium bicarbonate are the active ingredients contained in each capsule and oral suspension.

    Contraindications

    Do not take omeprazole and sodium bicarbonate if you are allergic to any of its ingredients.

    Cautions

    • Before you start taking omeprazole and sodium bicarbonate, inform your doctor:
      • Of your allergies
      • Of all the medications you take, including prescription and over-the-counter medications, vitamins, and herbal supplements
      • Of your medical conditions
      • If you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant
      • If you are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed
    • Although you may achieve symptomatic relief with omeprazole and sodium bicarbonate, it does not rule out the presence of gastric cancer.
    • Long-term treatment with omeprazole and sodium bicarbonate may cause atrophic gastritis.
    • Omeprazole and sodium bicarbonate can cause kidney inflammation.
    • Long-term treatment with omeprazole and sodium bicarbonate can cause vitamin B-12 deficiency.
    • Omeprazole and sodium bicarbonate can increase the risk of diarrhea associated with C. difficile.
    • Do not take omeprazole and sodium bicarbonate with clopidogrel, St. John's Wort, or rifampin.
    • Long-term treatment with omeprazole and sodium bicarbonate can increase the risk for hip, wrist, or spinal fractures.
    • Long-term treatment with omeprazole and sodium bicarbonate can cause low magnesium levels.
    • Omeprazole and sodium bicarbonate can interfere with diagnostic investigations for Neuroendocrine Tumors.

    Side Effects

    The most common side effects caused by omeprazole and sodium bicarbonate include headache, stomach pain, nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, and flatulence.

    Tell your doctor right away if you have side effects that bother you or won't go away.
