Directions
Give Amoxi by mouth exactly as prescribed by your veterinarian. For dogs, the usual dose is 5 mg per pound of body weight twice per day. For cats, the usual dose is 50 mg, about 5 to 10 mg per pound, once a day. It may be given with or without food. Keep giving it for the full 5 to 7 days, or for 48 hours after symptoms are gone. If your pet is not better after 5 days, contact your veterinarian.
If you miss a dose, give it when you remember, unless it is almost time for the next dose. Do not give two doses at the same time. For Amoxi-Drop liquid, add the amount of water shown on the bottle before the first use and shake well. Each mL contains 50 mg of amoxicillin. Shake before each dose, measure with the provided dropper, and throw away any unused liquid after 14 days. Refrigeration is best, but not required.
Ingredients
The active ingredient in Amoxi is amoxicillin. Check the label for potential inactive ingredients.
Cautions
Before using this medication, you may want to consult a veterinarian about the following:
- Any existing health conditions your pet has
- Any known allergies, especially to penicillin
- A list of all medications and supplements your pet is currently taking
Amoxicillin is a penicillin and can cause allergic reactions. Watch your pet for signs such as facial swelling, hives, difficulty breathing, or collapse. Severe reactions may require treatment with epinephrine or steroids.
Amoxicillin does not work against all bacteria. For example, it is not effective against penicillinase-producing bacteria, such as certain resistant staph. Whenever possible, your veterinarian may take a sample for culture and sensitivity testing before starting treatment to make sure the bacteria are susceptible.
Give the full course as prescribed and have your pet re-checked if there is no improvement within about 5 days.
This product is for use in dogs and cats only and is not for use in animals raised for food production.
Keep it out of reach of children and pets to prevent accidental ingestion.
Do not store the tablets or the dry suspension powder above 25°C (77°F), and keep the bottle tightly closed.
Once the Amoxi-Drop suspension is mixed, refrigeration is preferable, and any unused portion must be discarded after 14 days.
Contraindications
Avoid using this medication if any of the following apply:
- Animals with a history of an allergic reaction to penicillin.
- Use in animals other than dogs and cats, as Amoxi is for use in dogs and cats only.
Side Effects
Amoxicillin is generally tolerated well, but it has the potential to cause side effects. Possible effects may include:
- Digestive upset, such as reduced appetite, vomiting, or diarrhea
- Allergic reactions, such as skin rash, hives, or itching
Stop giving Amoxi and seek veterinary care if your pet shows signs of a serious allergic reaction, such as swelling of the face or muzzle, hives, difficulty breathing, weakness, or collapse, as these can be life-threatening and may require emergency treatment. Contact your veterinarian if digestive upset is severe or does not go away, or if your pet’s infection does not improve.
