What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

    Description

Cephalexin is a broad-spectrum antibiotic in the cephalosporin family. It works by killing bacteria and is commonly prescribed by veterinarians for dogs. Rilexine is a brand-name chewable form of cephalexin for dogs only. Veterinarians commonly prescribe it to treat skin infections caused by certain bacteria, especially Staphylococcus pseudintermedius.

    Directions

Cephalexin tablets are intended for oral use in dogs only. The usual dosage is 22 mg per kilogram (10 mg per pound) of body weight, given twice daily for a total of 28 days. Give the tablet by mouth, with or without food. Food may lower the peak concentration, but does not change overall absorption.

    Ingredients

Cephalexin is the active ingredient in this medication.

    Contraindications

Avoid taking or using this medication in dogs with a known allergy to this medication or any member of the beta-lactam group of antibiotics, including penicillins or cephalosporins.

    Cautions

    • Before giving this medication, consult a veterinarian about the following:
      • Any existing health conditions
      • Any allergies
      • A list of all medications being taken
    • This cephalosporin is only for use in dogs—never in humans. Keep the tablets out of reach of children.
    • If swallowed by a human, call a doctor or poison control center right away. People handling this medication should avoid getting it on their skin or in their eyes, especially if they’ve had allergic reactions to similar drugs.
    • Only use this antibiotic if your dog has a confirmed or suspected bacterial infection. Using antibiotics unnecessarily can lead to drug-resistant bacteria that are harder to treat.
    • These chewable tablets are made to be tasty, so pets may try to eat too many if they find them. Always store the tablets in a secure place to prevent overdose.
    • The safety of this medication in pregnant or nursing dogs, or those used for breeding, has not been studied. Ask your vet before using it in those situations.
    • This medication may affect lab test results, including tests for urine sugar, protein, or red and white blood cells. Rare blood-related side effects like anemia, low platelet counts, or changes in clotting time have also been reported.

    Side Effects

Cephalexin is commonly used in dogs and is generally well tolerated. The most commonly reported side effects include diarrhea, vomiting, loss of appetite (anorexia), and lethargy. These symptoms are usually mild and may resolve on their own, but it's important to contact a veterinarian if they persist or worsen.

In clinical trials, no serious lab abnormalities were seen when comparing this drug to a placebo. However, accidental overdose can occur if dogs eat extra chewable tablets because of their palatable flavor. Always store the medication securely and out of reach of pets. If a dog ingests more than the prescribed dose, call a veterinarian right away.
