What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

    Description

Epiduo Gel combines Adapalene and Benzoyl Peroxide. It is used as a medication to treat acne vulgaris. Adapalene falls into the category of synthetic retinoids, influencing cell turnover and reducing inflammation, while Benzoyl Peroxide may help kill bacteria and clear pores. This gel is suitable for topical application and is typically prescribed for individuals nine years of age and older. When used as directed, Epiduo Gel may help alleviate the symptoms of acne, but its full effectiveness can vary among individuals.

    Directions

The standard Epiduo Gel dosage involves applying the medication to the affected area once a day, ensuring the skin is clean and dry before application. It is crucial to use only a thin layer to cover the acne-prone regions, avoiding the eyes, lips, and nose. While using Epiduo Gel, patients should limit exposure to sunlight and artificial UV rays, such as tanning beds, and apply sunscreen when outdoors, as the treatment may increase the skin's sensitivity to sunlight.

    Ingredients

Epiduo Gel contains a blend of Adapalene 0.1% and Benzoyl Peroxide 2.5%, which works together to reduce acne.

    Contraindications

There are no listed contraindications on the drug label. However, if you have a history of hypersensitivity to Adapalene, Benzoyl Peroxide, or any component of the formulation, avoid its use.

    Cautions

    • Before starting treatment with Epiduo Gel, be sure to inform your healthcare provider about the following:
      • Any medical conditions you currently have
      • Any allergies
      • All medications you are currently taking
      • Whether you are pregnant or breastfeeding
    • Minimize exposure to sunlight and sunlamps while using Epiduo gel. Wear sunscreen and protective clothing like hats when exposure cannot be avoided.
    • Avoid using Epiduo gel in extreme weather conditions like wind or cold as these may irritate the skin.
    • Common skin reactions include redness, scaling, dryness, and stinging or burning, especially in the first four weeks. These usually become less intense with continued use.
    • If skin irritation becomes severe, consider using a moisturizer, applying Epiduo gel less frequently, or stopping its use.
    • Do not apply Epiduo gel on cuts, abrasions, eczematous skin, or sunburned areas.
    • Avoid waxing as a hair removal method on areas treated with Epiduo gel.
    • Avoid using other skin products that are irritating, such as those containing high levels of alcohol, astringents, or spices, alongside Epiduo gel.

    Side Effects

The most reported side effects of Epiduo Gel involve skin reactions. These include dryness, where 7% of users experienced this issue, compared to 2% using a non-medicated gel. Other reactions such as contact dermatitis, skin irritation at the application site, and burning sensations were reported, affecting a small percentage of users. Skin irritation generally peaks in the first week of use and tends to decrease over time.

Rare but more severe reactions have also been reported with Epiduo Gel use. These include eyelid swelling, severe sunburn, skin blisters, intense itching, facial swelling, conjunctivitis, noticeable skin discoloration, and eczema. Symptoms like throat tightness and allergic contact dermatitis have been noted as well, indicating possible allergic reactions. Patients should seek immediate medical attention if experiencing significant discomfort or signs of an allergic reaction.
