What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

    Description

    Gravol is for the prevention and treatment of nausea and vomiting. Sealed in blister strips for your protection. Only Gravol tablets have a unique FilmKote covering, a smooth coating which makes the tablets easy to swallow and eliminates any bitter aftertaste.

    Directions

    Adults: For relief of nausea, vomiting and/or dizziness, take 1 or 2 tablets every 4 hours as needed, up to a maximum of 8 tablets in 24 hours. Children 6 to 12 years: Take 1/2 to 1 tablet every 6 to 8 hours as needed, up to a maximum of 3 tablets in 24 hours. For motion sickness, take the first dose at least 1/2 hour and preferably 1 or 2 hours before departure.

    Ingredients

    Each FilmKote tablet contains Dimenhydrinate U.S.P. 50 mg. Nonmedicinal Ingredients (alphabetical order): Alumina, Cellulose, FD & C Yellow 6, Lactose, Magnesium stearate, Polyethylene glycol, Silicon dioxide, Starch (corn), Talc, Titanium dioxide.

    Cautions

    Do not exceed recommended dosage. May cause drowsiness, avoid driving a motor vehicle or performing tasks requiring mental alertness. Avoid alcoholic beverages. Do not take if you have: glaucoma, chronic lung disease, difficulty in urination due to enlargement of the prostate gland, or if you are pregnant or breast-feeding unless directed by a physician. Do not take with other antihistamines, tranquillizers or any other sedating drugs without consulting a physician. May cause excitability, especially in children. Prolonged use should be only on physician's advice.

    Side Effects

    Drowsiness is the most common side effect, which can actually be the intended effect when treating motion sickness.
