What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

    Description

Ilium Ear Drops is an ear cleansing and treatment solution for dogs and cats. Its active ingredients help remove ear mites, bacteria, and fungus that can cause ear problems. Classified as an antifungal, antimicrobial, and antiparasitic preparation, Ilium Ear Drops may be used to manage moist, waxy or smelly ears, as well as minor bacterial and yeast ear infections in pets. Ilium Ear Drops can help keep pets’ ears healthy and free from common ear issues.

    Directions

Gently clean the outside of the ear to remove any dirt or wax you can see before using the drops. Put 4 to 8 drops directly into the affected ear, twice a day, for 4 to 7 days. Be careful not to let the tip of the bottle touch the ear. After putting in the drops, gently rub the base of the ear to help spread the medicine, and let your pet shake out any extra liquid if needed. Do not use these drops if there is a chance that the ear drum is damaged. While using the drops, check the ear for any ongoing redness, discharge, or signs of pain. If these problems continue, contact your vet.

    Ingredients

The active ingredients in Ilium Ear Drops are Dichlorophen, Pyrethrins, Piperonyl Butoxide, and Lignocaine.

    Contraindications

Avoid giving this medication in dogs and cats in which the following apply:

    • Known allergy or hypersensitivity to any active or inactive ingredients
    • A ruptured or damaged eardrum
    • Recent ear surgery or ongoing ear injury
    • Severe ear inflammation or ulceration
    • Presence of foreign objects in the ear canal
    • Use in animals other than cats or dogs
    • Use with other topical ear medications unless advised by a vet

    Cautions

Before using Ilium Ear Drops, consider the following:

    • Inform the veterinarian about any known allergies their pet may have to medications, particularly those for ear conditions.
    • Provide a complete list of all medications and supplements their pet is currently receiving.
    • Let the veterinarian know if the pet has any chronic ear issues, such as a history of ruptured eardrums.
    • Watch for any signs of ear discomfort, including redness, swelling, unusual discharge, or irritation, and report any worsening symptoms to the veterinarian.
    • Ensure the drops do not get into the pet’s eyes or mouth.
    • Avoid using these drops on very young puppies or kittens unless specifically instructed by a veterinarian.
    • Consult a veterinarian if the pet is pregnant or nursing, since the safety of this medication in those situations is not fully known.
    • Stop using this medication and contact a veterinarian immediately if the pet experiences hearing problems, confusion, persistent discomfort, or any unusual reactions.
    • Store the ear drops in a cool, dry place with the lid securely closed, and keep them out of reach of children and other animals.

    Side Effects

Common side effects of Ilium Ear Drops may include mild irritation, redness, or a burning sensation in or around the ear area. Pets might also scratch their ears more, shake their heads, or show mild discomfort after application. In most cases, these reactions are temporary and do not need medical treatment.

More serious side effects can include swelling, intense redness, severe itching, or signs of an allergic reaction, such as facial swelling or difficulty breathing. If a pet shows any of these reactions, stop using the drops right away and contact a veterinarian as soon as possible.
