What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

    Description

Ketoconazole 200 mg tablets for dogs are veterinary medicine used to treat fungal skin infections. The tablets may be flavored to make them easier for dogs to take. In some cases, they can be split into halves or quarters for accurate dosing based on the dog's weight. These tablets are meant to be swallowed and should be given with food to help dogs absorb the medicine better.

    Directions

Ketoconazole 200 mg tablets are given by mouth to dogs. The usual dose is 10 mg of ketoconazole per kg of body weight once daily. This means a dog weighing 20 kg should receive one 200 mg tablet each day. Body weight should be checked carefully before choosing the dose. If needed, round down to the nearest quarter tablet to avoid giving too much. Treatment should last until at least two negative cultures, or as directed by a veterinarian.

    Ingredients

The active ingredient in this medication is ketoconazole.

    Contraindications

Avoid giving this medication if any of the following apply:

    • Known allergy or hypersensitivity to any ingredients in the product
    • Liver failure

    Cautions

    • Before giving this medication, you may want to consult a veterinarian about the following:
      • Any existing health conditions
      • Any allergies
      • A list of all medications currently being taken
    • Ketoconazole should only be used when your veterinarian is confident it will work for the specific infection. If testing isn’t possible, treatment should be based on local experience and guidelines to help prevent antibiotic resistance.
    • Repeated use can sometimes make other antifungal medicines less effective. In male dogs, ketoconazole may temporarily affect hormone levels and reduce breeding ability during treatment and for a few weeks afterward.
    • For skin infections like ringworm, cleaning your pet’s environment is just as important as treating the infection. Vacuum regularly, disinfect grooming tools, and throw away items that can’t be cleaned. Using both oral and topical treatments together often works best.
    • Long-term use can affect the liver, so your vet may do regular blood tests. Stop treatment right away if your pet shows signs of liver trouble. Because the tablets are flavored, store them securely so pets can’t get into them.
    • Keep ketoconazole out of reach of children. If someone swallows it by accident, get medical help immediately and bring the package with you. People who are allergic to ketoconazole should avoid handling it.
    • Some fungal infections in pets can spread to people. Wash your hands after handling your pet, avoid touching infected areas, and see a doctor if you notice any skin changes.

    Side Effects

Ketoconazole is generally well tolerated, but some dogs may experience side effects. Rarely, pets can show neurological signs such as unsteady movements or tremors, loss of appetite, low energy, vomiting, diarrhea, or signs of liver problems. These effects may occur even at normal doses.

In very rare cases, hormonal changes can happen, such as reduced testosterone or cortisol levels. These effects are usually temporary but may be a concern in breeding male dogs. If any unusual symptoms develop, stop treatment and contact your veterinarian.
