What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

    Description

Ketoconazole + Chlorhexidine + Cetrimide Shampoo is a medicated shampoo for dogs, cats, and horses that helps treat skin problems caused by germs, fungi (like yeast), and bacteria. This shampoo has three main ingredients that help stop the growth of fungus, kills bacteria, and helps cleanse while reducing itching and oily skin. By working together, these ingredients may help relieve irritation, itching, dandruff, flaking, and bad odors, making it easier to keep the animal’s skin and coat healthy.

    Directions

Before applying, shake the bottle well. Wet the animal thoroughly with clean water. Apply the shampoo evenly along the coat, focusing on problem areas like under the tail, around the lips, and between the toes. Massage it in gently to form a rich lather. Use enough shampoo to cover the skin and hair completely. Let the shampoo sit on the animal for 10 minutes. Keep the animal still and prevent licking during this time. Rinse away all foam with clean water, and allow the animal to dry naturally in a warm, draft-free area. Clean your hands after applying the shampoo.

    Ingredients

The active ingredients in this shampoo are ketoconazole, chlorhexidine gluconate, and cetrimide.

    Contraindications

Avoid giving this medication if any of the following apply:

    • Known allergy or hypersensitivity to any ingredients in the product
    • History of skin reactions like redness or itching after use
    • Use in animals other than dogs, cats, and horses

    Cautions

    • Before using this shampoo, you may want to consult a veterinarian about the following:
      • Any existing health conditions
      • Any allergies
      • A list of all medications currently being taken
    • Shake the bottle well before using this shampoo. It’s for external use only in animals and should not be used on any species other than cats and dogs.
    • This shampoo is safe for cats over 6 weeks old and dogs over 4 weeks old. Avoid getting it in your pet’s eyes. If it happens, rinse with plenty of water right away.
    • Do not let your pet lick itself during the bath or before it is fully dry. Also, keep puppies and kittens away from nursing mothers until their coats have dried completely.
    • If your pet develops redness, irritation, or any other reaction, stop using the shampoo and contact your vet. Always wash your hands thoroughly after applying the product.
    • To treat ringworm in cats, this shampoo must be used along with griseofulvin, an oral medication. Because ringworm is contagious, wear gloves and cover your arms when trimming or washing your cat’s fur.
    • Keep your pet from breathing in or swallowing the shampoo during use. If irritation worsens, or if symptoms don’t improve, stop treatment and call your vet.
    • Clean and disinfect your pet’s environment, such as bedding and kennels, to help prevent the infection from coming back.

    Side Effects

Side effects from this shampoo are usually mild and can happen in some pets. The most common side effects are temporary redness, itching, or dryness and flakiness where the shampoo was applied. Some animals might also feel mild burning or stinging after use.

In severe cases, pets can have an allergic reaction or more serious skin irritation, particularly if they already have skin allergies. Symptoms like severe itching, swelling, or increasing redness should be reported to a veterinarian immediately. To help prevent side effects, keep the shampoo away from the pet’s eyes and mouth, don’t let them lick their fur until it’s dry, and stop using the shampoo if irritation doesn’t improve or gets worse.
