What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

    Description

Meloxicam is a medicine for dogs that reduces pain, swelling, and inflammation. It’s an NSAID (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug) that works by lowering certain chemicals that cause pain and inflammation. Veterinarians may prescribe it for both short-term and long-term muscle or joint problems, like arthritis or recovery after a procedure. It comes as a chewable tablet and as a liquid or oral suspension.

    Directions

Before starting this drug, veterinarians typically look at a dog’s weight and health condition. They’ll prescribe the correct dosage for either the chewable tablet or the oral suspension.

    Meloxicam oral suspension:

    • Shake the bottle well before each use.
    • Mix the suspension with food.
    • On the first day, give 0.2 mg meloxicam per kilogram of body weight as a single dose.
    • From day two, reduce to 0.1 mg per kilogram once daily at 24-hour intervals.
    • Use the measuring syringe or dropper provided for accuracy.
    • The syringe is marked for maintenance dosing and requires double volume for the first day.

    Chewable tablet:

    • Give by mouth as directed by the veterinarian.
    • Make sure the exact prescribed dose matches the dog’s weight.

Unused tablet halves should stay in the blister package until the next dose.

    Ingredients

Meloxicam is the active ingredient in this drug.

    Contraindications

Avoid using this product if any of the following apply:

    • Pregnant or nursing females
    • Dogs with gastrointestinal ulcers or bleeding
    • Dogs with liver, heart, or kidney disease

    Cautions

    • Before giving this medication, you may want to consult a veterinarian about the following:
      • Any existing health conditions
      • Any allergies
      • A list of all medications currently being taken
    • Stop giving this medication and contact your vet right away if your pet shows any side effects. This medication should not be used in pets that are dehydrated, have low blood volume, or have low blood pressure, as it can increase the risk of kidney problems.
    • Meloxicam should not be given to pregnant or nursing animals, as its safety in these cases isn’t known. It should not be used with other NSAIDs or steroids, since combining them can cause serious side effects.
    • Certain medications, such as diuretics, blood thinners, and some antibiotics, can interact with this medication and increase the risk of toxicity. Tell your vet about all medicines your pet is taking before starting treatment.
    • If your pet has recently been on another anti-inflammatory drug, your vet will usually recommend a break of at least 24 hours before starting it. The exact time may be longer depending on the previous medication.
    • In case of an overdose, your vet will provide supportive treatment. People who are allergic to NSAIDs should avoid handling this product. If it’s accidentally swallowed, seek medical help immediately and bring the package with you.
    • Dispose of any unused medication or empty containers according to local regulations. Keep it out of reach of children and pets.

    Side Effects

Meloxicam, like other NSAIDs, can sometimes cause side effects in pets. In rare cases, these may include loss of appetite, vomiting, diarrhea, blood in the stool, lethargy, or kidney problems. In addition, pets may develop bloody diarrhea, vomiting blood, stomach ulcers, or elevated liver enzymes.

Most side effects appear within the first week of treatment and often resolve after stopping the medication, but in severe situations they can be serious or even fatal. If your pet shows any unusual symptoms while taking meloxicam, stop the treatment and contact your veterinarian right away.
